PostPosted: Fri Dec 15, 2006 10:12 pm    Post subject: My Avairy

I bought an avairy this year, and first i wanted a natural looking avairy, but with the Kaks they like to have fun. Ive ended up with different things for them to play in, especially the hanging tunnels.

I miss my Sugar indoors, but the Kaks are really enjoying the avairy.

Looks good...
A few suggestions
Get a safty door...other wise u WILL loose the kakariki
Dump the dowel perchs, use garden branches.
I drill a hole in the end of them, a use non tensile #8 wire to hook them on the top wire, and the other goes thru the hole in the perch, with the wire bent at 90 deg.
I also use old fence posts, 5 or 6" in diameter.
Toys are best put in a couple at a time and swapped every week or so.
Around the base put a kick board on the inside, about 8 to 10" high stop mice getting in. and if have quail, stops the chicks getting out.
#3 sand, pumice sand on the floors, easy cleaning with a small hand leaf rake.

Thanks Steps..im learning thier needs, and doing things to improve the avairy as i find out or just think of ideas.so different to indoor cages.

Safety door...so right Think ..Spice flew out, wall but as hes so much in love with Sugar he just flew on the wire beside her. It was an easy catch, but i really need a porch. If that was my Sugar..well it dont bear thinking about. Pray

wood perches are slowly being replaced, i have found out they go black too quick outside. Unless i take a saw down the woods, Think i cant really get a good few think branches. I give them Hazel to nibble on, but perhaps ill go buy something.
Im making a panel at the moment , one i can take down for the summer.
As for a kick board , i'm thinking of that too, not for mice, just maybe for a different floor, i wouldnt mind 1/2 something other than concreate slabs.

Floors:

How easy is it to lift one of the smaller slabs?
Dig a hole that a 20L bucket with holes in will drop in, get a plastic tray to fit over, run a 13mm polyethene water line from the garden tap with a automatic battery timer on. Set the timer so it replaces the water in the tray plus a bit more, once a day, over flows into the hole and drains away.

It doesnt take much to knock up a little stand alone safty room about 1mm x 1mm, and attach with 4 wooden tags screwed

If a bird gets out, if they are not chassed around, they will hang around the avairy, attracted by the calling of the other birds.
A wire rat trap of the trap door type, set with food, will catch them everytime

Branches, the best ones are those laying on the ground, wash well
