well, it's my first post, and its a call for advice!
we have just got a new Kak about 3 weeks ago and have put him in with my other one. they started off chasing around etc, but now have settled down quite comfortably.
trouble is, he keeps scratching behind his ears and has a couple of bald patches now. We've treated them both for mites, even tho it doesn't look like it is first there are no signs, second they have both been given a clean bill of health recently and thirdly because she hasn't shown any similar signs or behaviour. If they were still fighting i would put it down to nerves or fear etc. but they are fine now- playing together, playing with toys and tearing broccolli apart bit by bit!
if anyone can help with suggestions i'd appreciate it- to get to a vet i trust (from what i can work out he's also the closest avian vet to me) i have to spend an hour and a half on tubes and buses.
Run a word search ("quick search" block to the left for "mites" I think Peter has very good info on mite treatment and control....
Also try a mist spray of the cage and birds with a 50/50 sol'n of vinegar and water. We have found over the yrs this could be a reliable method of mite/worm control.
Birds should never be intoduced to your stock without a couple weeks of isolation...taking the word of retailers is a mistake, a full vairified vet report is far more reliable thu even then it pays to isolate dose and observe.

Carefull, too much of 1 food can cause minerial /vitamin in balances....please read the section of diet...most parrots do not eat much seed...they eat 3 to 4 times more vegies/fruit than seed. Calcuim is also critical in parrots. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
don't worry- they get a variety of fruits and veg's every day and happily eat all of them- its just that they seem to actually play with the broccolli as well as eat it, which they don't with other stuff! he was quarantined for a week before being introduced to Vandiv. it seems to me to be more some sort of habit rather than anything else- otherwise Vandiv would be scratching or something. he also certainly doesnt seem bored or anything either. its confusing.
