Some time back we bred a hen from one of our Black eyed clear pairs. She is a normal coloured bird but is considerably darker than the normal wild coloured birds. We decided to pair her to a Black eyed clear cock bird and they recently hatched their first clutch. These young are 2 black eyed clears and a cinnamon hen.
The birds are now 3 months old and the cinnamon hen is rather unusual. She is much darker than the normal cinnamon and retains the dark colour on both the chest and back areas. Our other cinnamons are naturally lighter on the chest area than their backs and wings. The feathering on this bird is also very smooth which is not a characteristic of the cinnamon mutation either. It would seem the darker factor of the normal hen has been passed onto this cinnamon bird. I will post some pictures of this bird very soon. It could be something new and exciting for Kakariki mutations here in Australia.
