Hi, i have been watching this site for a little while now...i hope i am writing in the correct section....as i have quite a few questions...but first...a bit of background...we bought a house and the man just left all the birds here so all of a sudden i had to learn all i could about parrots...some of them i didnt even know what they were...and yep, kakarikis were among them....i have sold most of the other birds, mostly ringnecks but kept a few...i have become very attatched to the kakarikis, hence being prompted to join and get amongst it. The female died a while back and i put the male in with some Princess parrots for company, they got on great but i wanted to get him a girlfriend...so i bought one, not knowing there was yellow fronteds and red fronteds till after the deed. So i have a yellow fronted male and a red fronted female. They bonded immediately and are totally in love with each other, it is a delight to see them...so...suddenly i have 6 eggs, but only one survived the heat and whatever else...i dont know what do do with him as obviously he is a hybrid...two people wanted him but now they have pulled out which annoys me as he is probably too old be become really friendly (he would be nine weeks old now and bigger than his father)...anyway, now there ar 3 more live babies...2 1/2 weeks old...and doing well so far...i check the nest box every second day, not that i could do anything anyway. So i guess i need to know what to do with the babies. If they survive how will i go about selling them. How young can they be taken out of the nest as most people want them really young for bonding etc....they are all gorgeous and it is a beautiful breed, i had never heard of them...a few weeks ago my male got out and i was so upset..i had read somewhere that they usually come back and true to their word he was there at my feet totally enjoying his freedom, he looked so good on the grass and even though i couldnt catch him that evening...he was back in the morning and i easily coached him into his cage...he was glad to be back and hasnt tried getting out again..anyway, like i said i am very new at this kakariki game and the whole bird game but do love my birds but also need to be sure i can sell the babies as otherwise i end up with lots of related birds which can be very confusing and very bad for the breed. I have spent hours reading all there is to read on this site...it is quite addictive...anyway...we all have to start somewhere, cheers, jude

hello my name is josh im 17 i have got a pair of kakarik's and they are inside an aviary in a shed in my back garden it is a fairly large one they were a pair when i bought them so i put them in the aviary as soon as i got home this was when i started of at the begginig i had feed them as normal until i had started noticing that the female was getting quite large and was not moving activly around the cage at first i though that there was something wrong with it so i told my dad and he said just keep an eye on it so for the next few days i had done it semed to be coping quite well it hadnt got any worse so i caried on the next day i went in and i noticed it wasnt there so my first obious instint was to check in the nest box and there it was it was startled at first so it moved away from what it was sitting on and when i went for a closer look there were 6 eggs that she was sitting on so imeditely shut the lid and left it i carried on feeding them but as i did this i also uped the amount that i was feeding them because i knew that this would help i also put cuttlebone in because it helps the eggs so i carried on feeding as normal and i left the female because i knew if i disterbed her she would abandon the eggs so after about a week i checked on the female she was still there sttting so i left her so about a week later or so i checked again i could not really see anything but i cold here a sort of churping noise so i knew stright away that they had hatched but i didnt no how many because i didnt want to disturb the female at such any early stage so yet again i left her to sitting and caring for the chicks i had checked on them a few times after that and then ove ri piriod of about 3 days i noticed that she had started to come out of the nest box to feed and get water so i took my chance and dicided to have a look and as i took of the top of the nest box there were 4 kakarikis sat there they had started to get fethers on them they were a mixed colour of green and yellow so again i left them and there mother toget on with things about a week down the line i noticed that the female was not at all going into the nest box so i checked inside the nest box to see if the chicks were still ok and so i did i found out that the chicks were climbing up out of the nest box to get feed of the female and though this may be the best chance to see if i can tame them seen as they were grown enough to start handiling them i did this for about 3 days and i told my dad that i was doing this and he didnt mind so he said i could proberbly take them out of the nest box but i was a bit edgey about this because it was the first time i had ever bred anything from my birds so i left it about two days before i did take them out i had a seprate cage ready for them so i transfered them into the cage and i thought that it would be better if they were inside the house so i took them in and i have handled them most days they have been growing that was about 3 weeks ago and they have servived and are tame i let them fly about out of the cage when i can but it can be done when i first started i thought that it could never be done but this proves it can if you want it and put the effort and hard work into it you can send me a post if you want i dont no if i helped you but it just proves that it can be done

Thanks Josh...so what do you plan to do with your tame babies now? When you got them out of the box what did you feed them and how often. I dont want to get them out too early and have to feed them every 2 hours!!! My little ones now are going on 3 weeks and i want to leave them with the parents for awhile but would like to sell them soon. I cant keep them as they would all be related...i think i will try petlink...thanks for your advice...and good luck with your birds...jude

Hi Jude and w3c to our site.

As you said in your post hybrids dont really have much use in the future breeding of Kakariki. Your idea to sell the babies as pets is probably the best idea as the chances are they will be kept as single birds. In regard to selling them either petlink or maybe even your local petshop will be interested in pet Kakariki as they normally sell very quickly.

If you want to pull the babies and hand rear them I would suggest you do so fairly soon. Once the birds have feathered up it can be difficult to get them to take food from a spoon. If the birds are 50 - 70% feathered you can remove them from the nest and place them in a plastic container. We use a 9 litre tub and simply place a chux superwipe over the top with some elastic to keep it in place. As the birds learn to fly they can be moved to a small cage but in the early stage the tub works well. By placing the chux over the top heat is generated by the chicks and keeps the tub warm. Simply keep the tub in a room that is around 25 degrees celcius and the birds will be fine. I also recommend that you get some cat litter. Use the recycled paper pellets. It is cheap to buy (you can get it from the supermarket) and absorbs moisture very well.

You can get a hand rearing mix from the local fodder store or some pet shops. In the initial stages make the mix very weak. In other words it should be watery. Use a small plastic spoon to encourage the chicks to take from the spoon. Plastic is thinner and the birds will take to it a lot easier. Once you have fed them a few times, you can bend up a metal teasponn and use that. The mix can also be made a bit thicker at this time. Feed the birds every 4-5 hours or when the crop has emptied. You will see that as the chicks get older the crop takes longer to empty and so the number of feeds is reduced. Once the feathers on the head have fuly developed you could safely place some canary seed in the cage for them also.

A couple of things to remember. The food should not be above 42 degrees when fed to the chicks. Use boiling water BUT allow the mix to cool before feeding. Change the birds bedding every day to prevent bugs. Follow these simple steps and I am sure you will do well.

If you have any further questions just ask. I will try to check the site every day in case you have problems.

Cheers Kaka-riki.

I dont really want them to have any more chicks so what do i do with the eggs if they lay another batch?? Someone once said to boil them and put them back...sounds pretty awful!!! thanks again, jude

Jude.

To stop the birds hatching anymore eggs use plastic eggs. While you are buying the hand rearing food pick up some plastic eggs. We actually use budgie sized eggs for this purpose. Remove all fresh eggs as soon as they are laid and replace with a plastic one. When the hen leaves the eggs because they haven't hatched take the plastic eggs away and store them. Eventually the hen will stop laying and the problem will be solved.

gaday w3c to the site, its a good place to be. anyways im not going to say much ,others have already past there coment, which in all they have lots of exsperience ,i thought i new heaps after 20 yrs but i have learnt heaps more since joining. what i am about to say next is not directed just at you it is to every body that puts red fronts with yellow fronts.
firstly if you know absolutly nothing about these birds and you end up with 2 (male and female)kakas and they breed ,as soon as you do find out that it is not the done thing to do why dont you separate them amediatly? why let them sit again? yeh, so what ,they have formed a bond and peolple dont like to break up there pets. wrong ! people with this attatude screw up the breed of bird we at this site are trying so hard to get right. im in perth and i tell you what hybrids here are becoming a big problem. it shits me to tears because i am an animal lover and i also save unwanted animals and theres a lot of them, and now people come to me with kakas to ask me what they have actually got and it makes me mad that these people ask me when i tell them they have just payed heaps of money for a hybrid bird and they want me to dispose of it ,because they have had them to long and cant get there money back .also breeding these birds and then finding out they are hybrids and the young are about 3 to4 weeks pull them and hand rear them and only give them to people who are not going to breed from them and put the condition on it that if they ever dont want the bird for any reson ,they put it down or get them to return the bird to you so you can do it humanly.
bottom line DONT PUT YELLOW FRONTS IN WITH RED FRONTS.
IF PEOPLE KEEP DOING THIS WE WILL END UP WITH NO TRUE BIRDS.....
Debbie
p.s aviculturists breed birds to keep the true breed and beter it were they can NOT DISTROY IT.......

Hi Debbie, i hear you loud and clear!!! I am a bit annoyed that the man i bought the kakariki from did not tell me about the two fronts. He knew mine was a yellow fronted but still i take full responsibility since i should have done my homework. Anyway the damage is done...i WILL NOT be breeding with this mixed pair again so dont worry, i too love all creatures great and small and really love kakarikis, they are a beautiful bird. So....i have taken the babies out of the nest and will hand rear them. I am nervous about it since i hope they dont get a chill or i inadvertantly give them an infection or something. But i have heeded all the advice given and have the litter, the container, the chux and the baby mix...so it is all systems full steam ahead and i will sell them only as pets and if they dont sell i will keep them and love them their whole lives. Thankyou for your concern and your input...have a happy xmas, jude

May I suggest doing the other way around..
Chances are, If u sell them they will still be breed.
Keep the hybrids as house birds...
Get another kakariki to breed with, Breed and sell those.
