What are the requirements????

Hi,
I am new to this forum, from New Zealand and have always been interested in the Kakariki. (I also breed other parrots). What are the requirements for the housing of these birds and do you still need permits in NZ to keep them.

Any help would be greratly appreciated, also a source for a breeding pair when the time comes.

Yes u still need permits...About $NZ for 3yrs
Contact the local DoC office
Requirements...there are no 'official' specs, so much depends on the local DoC officer
The Plans I have here on the site...The comments from DoC when they inspected was "ideal"
Position, tree shelter from prevailing winds etc is also taken into consideration IF the inspector knows what he is about..as is a basic knowledge of feeding requirements.
DoC does make "suggestions" and qualifies with "contact a NZ kakariki breeder for more detailed information" But DoC cant give you names because of privacy issues..Hence 1 of the reasons I started this site.

WARNING...it is legal to possess or breed Yellow/Red crown hybrids..
Hybrids are reasonably common, thu it seems many DoC inspectors cant identify these (info in forums and gallery here) because they do occasionally close some breeders down, usually because of poor conditions and up keep, then pass these hybrids onto reputable breeders on their list...We have a couple here...for example purposes only.
The 2 Species must be kept separate...

You may keep mutations, to the best of my knowledge we do not have mutations in NZ as you see from the overseas members here.
A word of warning thu, I have no doubt most DoC inspectors cant tell the difference between a hybrid and mutation, all they need is to suspect, get their nose in a joint and can they confiscate ALL your birds....be they proved right or wrong..

Only 1 pair per flight, this is reasonable when breeding, but kakariki are social birds, it is far better to keep stock in a community flight, they are far happier, so long as not over crowded.
You can not mix with other species of birds, thu they do socialise extremely well unless in breeding season.

The DoC grass root guys, who DO know about kakariki, in my experience are very good and reasonable ppl, who I have great respect for.

Our current Red stock is currently all male...We supplied DoC a few months ago with quite a few pairs for surrogate parents in the Orange breeding program in Te Anau
Our stock of yellows is also very low at the moment, thu I do know other breeders who could supply

Kakariki transport very well, we have never lost a bird, and we do ship from 1 end of the country to the other.
