Hi everyone
I have bought my first kaka from a couple of week and i am slowly discovering the world of these wonderful birds!
i have one question for all of u: how to make him less scarred of me?i mean, when i give him food he takes that from my hand but he is still scarred for example to jump on my hand or to fly free in the house.
Can u suggest some rules how to "train" kakarikis and to not be scarred of the owner?
thanks and congratulations to who made and keep update this amazing website!

Admin: Combined posts.

In the shop they told me he is...what do u think?

p.s.
the last pic is the nest box i made temporarily,i am gonna make it better (woodmade) but with the same dimensions...what do u think bout it?

we have made a decision to let our two pet kakarikis breed and so have put a nest box in their cage. I understand that when they have eggs and babies they will become terratorial and protective and have nothing to do with us. My only worry is that when the babies and nest box are gone that they will completely lose their tameness or will they return to their usual self I would be greatful for any advice on the situation from anyone

Straight up....forget it
The hole is to big, and too low, the chicks will leave the nest too early, if not fall out...cardboiards and tape, they will destroy it in no time.....good toy for them to keep occuped...but remove the tape

Correct

incorrect
This depends on the Trust they have of u...look at my avatar to the left , and these are not tamed kakariki.

Kakariki naturally do not have fear of man like most other species, and dont under estimate parrots, they have VERY long memories...running into yrs and decades..I have had tamed parrots reconise me years later.
