I think you will find mites is a common issue in most capitive birds..The My question to self was then is why more so in captive than in the wild?
I know suspetablity to other insects and infections had a realtionship with very small changes in the blood system pH....
We have not had to dose for mites or worms for over 7 yrs now, other than preventive and treatment measures with new birds, which get isolated before introduction into flights....
Birds have access to fermentation at many stages, alcohol and acetic acid.
Most people do not supply acetic acid and if they do a few drops rediculoisly diluted down in the water...We supply neat apple cider vinegar neat in the chopped veggies every 3 to 5 days.

So i'm shure this prob is realy widespread.
Bottom line..
Therefore I do not consider mites or worms a problem, and those who do have a "problem" it is them.....and responsabity has also got to be laid with the pharmicutical companies ...who if promotted apple cider vinigar maintance would not sell their over priced products. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
hello
my exhibitions budgeries had scaly mite problem, and a reputed breeder advised me to mix .25ml ivermactin in 400ml water...
is it ok?
one of my frind is using scatt, they way you using ivermactin,he is using scatt...
regards
I think we discussed adding things to the water way back....Well think how much water they drink in a day..ad that can vary between days and seasons...And having a known concentration plus u are going to change the water every day.
How can one be sure the animal is going to get ther required dosage at the right intervals? rather hit and miss.
Hence why recomend direct oral /dosages direct to the skin, and vet tend to do the same including injection.
I do not know what "scatt" is and invermectin comes in several forms for sheep cattle etc ....make sure that the correct form and concentation is used.
We have never had scaley mite , or any mite since regualar maintaince with vinegar spray and apple cider vinegar in the diets...IF we did get an issue I would be washing everything down, mist spray everything with 50/50 water and vinegar (repeated at least 10 day intervals) sheep invermecton , a drop on the back of the neck and repeated at least every 10 days for 3 or 4 doses.
And the bird isolated in the hospital cages/flights. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
i love reading the website, haven't read a real book in ages ...
Was wondering when you say you mix neat apple cider vinegar into your chopped veges, how much do you mean? 5 ml per cup of veges or something similar ...
My kaks, of which i now have nine, in a large mixed aviary with budgies and cocokatiels are slowly trying and accepting more veges/fruit, mostly celery, apple, peas/corn, but they regurarly get carrot, beetroot, snowpeas, citrus and broccoli stalks and having started having little nibbles so I dont want to add too much and have them turn their nose up.
Cheers
Jo
I make up enough fresh chopped veggies for 4 to 5 days, about 6 to 7kg.
The last 2 feeds gets a good slopp from the bottle...I supose about 5 or 6 spoon fills....ehough to soak but not enough to float around in the bottom before the next feed in the evening. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
