I have a 12 month old (male ) I was told, who has had scruffy feathers since i bought him. ~His head looks dry.
Last week he wouldnt stand on his leg, and when i took him to the vets they said that he may have beeen clawed by our cat.
ive read several posts on here, and think he may have mites. He is now pecking at his leg.

Can anyone advise the best solution to this. The vets was to have him put down. Not on your nelly.

did he get given antibiotics? cat claws are notoriously dirty! do you think he was clawed by the cat? would the cat have had access to the bird?
either way I would get him treated for mites, you also need to get the leg checked properly by another vet, a second opinion. Our bird vet told us lameness could be caused by internal problems, best to get that checked to, if he is pecking the leg he could cause any wound on it himself.
How long have you had him if you don't mind me asking? where did you get him from?

I agree with cheekykiwi. Lameness can be caused by internal problems such as bacteria, fungus and parasites. They emit waste products that cause an allergic reaction which result in leg/foot chewing and/or feather chewing. I would let him examine for intestinal problems such as enteritis.
In the meanwhile I would give him vegetables rich in saponins(spinach, chick peas, navy beans, aubergin, silverbeet, mungbeans, soybeans etc
I also would recommend garlic as a natural antibiotic.
Other vegetables are fine but have less antibacterial, antiparasitic properties.
Is it possible to show some pics of the bird?

the vet gave us an oral antibiotic in the hope he would drink it .I bought a water barrel feeder and I have watched him drink, he is putting weight on his leg now and will fly.
I live in the midlands, the vet said he had never seen a bird like mine and when i asked about his condidiotn that was his reply!

what do people feel about the vinegar 50/50 solution?

I will try the feeding tips too.
Dawn

hi I looked on google for avian vets and found this one in Birmingham
Amicus Veterinary Centre, 90 Marshall Lake Road, Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands, B90 4PN
Tel. (0121) 733 1439

don't know how close that is to you but they should have a better idea of how to treat him.
gorgeous bird by the way :)
