Hello, I am new to here-
I decided to ask a question since my family desided to get our male kaka a buddy. We used to have two kakarikis, one of which (girl) passed away last year (she gradually became weak and lot ability to fly after we left them with our friend while we were on a holiday). The boy was a depressed after his girl passed away, but soon got better. I noticed that without her, he is not as active, and can spend a long time out of cage perched on the curtains or wall-mounted objects. He runs around the floors, is nosy around the house and makes quite a bit of noise. He takes a bath every day (more frequently in summer), and all of his water is changed daily, in the morning. Same with his seeds- he has grit/sand and mineral blocks in his cage, we add vitamins to his water. He is given fresh fruit and vegetables almost every day. I am a bit worried about him looking like he is molting almost through the whole year. We had him for four years now.
Anyway, on to introducing the new buddy.
We have decided that it is going to be either a female kakariki (or two), or a make cockatiel. We had experience with cockatiels before, but had to give them as we were moving abroad. My question is- will all parrots get along, especially if there are two female kakarikis introduced? Or is it better to have one? I have read stories of kakarikis and cockatiels getting along nicely, but what is the best way to introduce them?
Thanks
1 female kakariki would be better rather than 2
Or a cockatiel, what ever you prefer
The best metod of introduction is to introduce them to a 'new' cage...
different from the one the kakatiki is in now
He will have devaloped a ownership/terrority in the current cage.
You can use the current cage, but cage its position in the room, change the perches and to different locations, new toys etc.
There will be a little pecking order which is normal.
One should isolate any new birds for a couple weeks in case of introducing mites dease etc..or at least dose them for mites and worms, clean cage and spray with 50/50 vinegar and water and add a few drops of applecider vinegar to there veggies once a week.
Run a forum search for invermectin (worming/mites) quick search block on the left of the page. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Right. I gave Kepi his first treatment using the anti-parasit medicine (gel-like), it said that it contained invermectin. Hopefully it'll do him good.
The package advised for the second treatment to be 4 weeks after the first one, about the time I was planning to get a buddy for Kepi.
The package advised for the second treatment to be 4 weeks after the first one,
Check the instructions....2nd dosage is normally about 12 to 14 days and onther in a similar period
The reason is it is about this time any remaining eggs start to hatch and eliminates adult worms/mites from laying more eggs. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
