Hi again Peter. My dark faze fallow hen to a normal cock has produced pied chicks and chicks with white toes but she shows no sighn of pied and the cock is 100% normal, were does the pied come from? Regards Laurie.
Hi Laurie,
This means that the pied is of a recessive form. So, both parrents are split to this.
There are 2 possible mutations:
- The first is the major recessive pied and displays a high amount of pied. This one has also dark eyes.
- The second is difficult. I classify this one as a dominant pied but this isn't exactly true. It is a collection of minor pied genes(probably more than 12) as well dominant as recessive. eg pied toes, wingfeathers, tail, reversed T on the neck...
out of interest, this season I produced 1 recessive pied youngster (female), no visible iris (the eye is plum).
Parents are: SF dominant pied father (split recessive pied) x green mother (split rec. pied).
This pair has produced several dominant pied chicks, some greens and 1 recessive pied.
I'll pair the mother with a goldcheck cock to check up if she is actually recessive pied.

Thank you Peter, I know the hen was bred from a pair of pieds but shows no pied at all. The cock is normal with no pied in his blood line at all. Does this mean that the pied is comming from the genes of the hen. Regards Laurie.

Peter, I am not sure what it means but could the hen be D/F Dominant and would that make a difference.
I consider the dominant pied as a collection of minor pied genes and modifying genes as well dominant as recessive. Together they intensify the amount of pied. Without the others you probably would not notice the expression of a single minor pied.
It is known that the pairing of a DF dominant pied x normal sometimes results in normal chicks. But genetically they are SF pied. The reason is that the virtual expression of the remaining SF minor pied genes is to little. After all the recessive minor pied genes are present in a split form and therefore can not influence them.
To answer you question. The hen can be only SF dominant.

Thank you Peter, to prove my normal cock is split to pied I will mate him to a pied hen, should I use a recessive or dominant one and will this work.
I guess you already proved it in the current pairing. If you mate the cock to a dominant pied hen it will be difficult to determine where the pied comes from because the pied hen will always make pied chicks.

Thank you Peter,I will put him with a recessive pied hen and see what happens,I am not questioning your knowledge but I cannot work out how he inherrited a pied gene. I will let you know what the results are, thanks again Laurie.
