Hello, I need some advise.I have just had to have my hen put to sleep and I am now left a male which I know will pine as that was the reason I got him a friend but I don't want to get another kakariki. He pulled his tail feathers out last time and i don't want him to do it again. will he get over having the company of another bird?or will he always pine?I have 2 choice if he does, I could re-home him or get another bird, what other birds do kakariki get on with? would a budgerigar be okay? He is about 4 yrs old.

Hi Nicky

I'm sorry about your hen, might she be in peace.

Regarding your male, if you give him yourself some company he will be as good as with any other bird.
In my case they get on well with cockatiels and budgies but they don't quite understand each other. I even have 2 male kikes that feed each other (they are kind of bonded due to lack of females in that holding flight), so adding another male kike could be an option.

Regards / Pablo
