hi all
saturday 5th june my kak laid an egg off the pirch to the bottom of the cage, the egg didn't make it!
today she has laid a second "in the box this time " the male has been removed due to other reasons covered in another thread,
question is will she cope on her own if they r fertile "big if!".
also there were 6 days between laying is this normal as i were told they would come more frequently... like every other day.
she hasn't started sitting the egg but shis is tendering to it.
any advice would be great. _________________ thanks brucie..... |

Chances are they will not be fertile
If they are yes she can manage on her own
If anything happens to either one the other raises the chicks
Time between eggs can vary greatly.
Contary to common belief, birds lay eggs and dont start to incubate till old or nearly all are laid...eggs can be left for around 10/14 days depending on enviromental conditions. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative' |

Hi!
good luck with the batch of eggs.
If you read some late posts by Steps, he thinks that infertile eggs should be left all the way, as they act as "hot water bottles" for other eggs and chicks. THis is especially useful for a lonely chick.
Keep us posted about the progress!

There is a slim chance even after 4 weeks they could be fertile. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative' |

my hen has laid eggs 10 days into incubation and pabloc says u think its good to leave them in the nest to work as water bottles. i was wondering if she has done this solely because she only had 1 egg... just a thought mearly.
this is why i asked if the late egg laying was happening with small or large clutches or both _________________ thanks brucie..... |

Hi!
kakariki hens might lay every other day up to 6-8 eggs, that means around 2 weeks of laying, if that´s what you mean?
The idea is not that they lay their batch of eggs, then add in a few more "water bottle eggs".
The idea is that the "water bottle eggs" are normal eggs, laid together with the rest of the batch.
Do we understand each other now?

The hot water bottle idea is just therory, suposition, nothing other than all our batches always have a couple eggs that dont hatch and the young chicks wrape themselves around when the hen is not there
A to being the 1st or last eggs, I would have no idea. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative' |

sorry i havent explained it right... she laid 2 eggs over 13 days 1 broke.
then she started to sit. 10 days into incubation she started laying again 2 broke three made it. the first egg seems to be fertile "if i'm not mistaken...big if" due in bout 4-5 days.
the others r infertile n i was wondering if she layed the eggs solely to help incubate her single. sorry for the confusion. _________________ thanks brucie..... |
