Hi all can you tell me if it is safe to feed cabbage? I feed my two some the other day, they did eat it but i wouldn't say they loved it. I did notice that night on the forums not to feed it to them as it can cause toxins. I was very worried. Yet on a seperate forum some fed cabbage in thier diet could anyone tell me if it is safe and if so how often can you feed .
Thanks Kirin

Hi!
Im no expert, but I feed my kakariki green and white cabbage on a regular basis with no problems. I only feed them small amounts and its always mixed in with at LEAST 6 other veggies. They seem to prefer the stalks to the leaf!
I have read an awful lot about what you are and arent supposed to feed kakariki, and had advice from some super 'elders' on this board. It appears quite a lot of the diet rules are myth.
I have come to the conclusion that if I cant put it in MY mouth, I wont try it in theirs!
Little and varied!
(Please correct me if I am wrong!)

Hi!

My grandpa has lots of cabbage, lettuce and leafy greens planted in the orchard and they get a leave quite often (1x or 2x /week)
Kakariki and cockatiels feast on it.

Many people say this kind of food gives diarrhea to birds, but I think it's wrong, just the feces are a bit more liquid due to the % of water contained in this kind of foods, compared to dry seed.

There are several threads in which other supposed "poisonous" foods are discussed (apple pips, advocado, eggplants, potatos, etc..).
And nevermid if someone thinks you are nuts because of feeding your kakariki animal bones and meat.

Cheers / Pablo

The problem with cabbage ..or basically any food for that matter, is the birds get a bit of seed , nothing else, then someone throws a whole lot of cabbage or what ever in, and they get diarrera.
Of coase they bloody well.

.....Im not correcting you

Varied, constant and balanced

People who dont eat like that get obese, diebeties, heart/lung issues, kidney/liver issues, rickets, cancer and die early.

Thanks all for your post it has helped my confusion. I have two guineapigs too that love thier veg and grass/dandelion leaves and so on so it would be economical for me to feed them all the same.
Thanks Kirin
