Hi! I am a new member here. I woke up this morning to find my male Kak (Oscar) on the bottom of the aviary. He flew up right away as soon as I approched him. About an hour later he was on the bottom again so this time I caught him to check him out. His left leg was bloody, black and dangling!! He was bit by another bird.
The vet did an x-ray. Broken leg!! She splinted it up and he is on pain meds, 2 types, and antibiotics. She did a pinch nerve test and there was no response which is bad. She says that he may never get back any sensation and that his leg might have to be amputated in a few days after we see how the antibiotics are working and how the leg looks. His leg was so black and bruised. Poor guy!
Would he be able to live with only 1 leg? I know other birds can but kaks use their legs for climbing, etc..
I am worried about him as you can tell he is hurting. I know the meds are helping but I feel so guilty for not noticing right away. He is eating and drinking and I placed him in a brooder as per the vet so he can stay warm. I seperated him from his mate so she doesn't chew the splint off.
Had a lineolated parakeet a few weeks ago... found him with a very swollen leg, constrained by the ring.
Cut the ring with an electric nail trimmer (my sister is a make-up artist), we made a bloodshed and the bird was bleeding. Tried to cut hemorrage but we weren't very successful.
Told my grandpa to cull it because I had a feeling the bird was having a hard time. He told me to wait.
Next morning she was doing fine.
Spent a few days on doxycicline in an isolation cage. Leg was black but a canary breeder told me to leave it alone, it would fall on its own.
And so it did. The lower part of the leg fell, from the knee joint.
Inspected her, looks great so released on the main aviary. Now we have to keep an eye see if any of the birds bite her leg, but she is indeed fine.
And I am relieved. Would have been a pity to cull her, since she seems to be in good shape. Of course, she has some difficulties now but she does ok climbing the wire, accessing the food bowls, etc...
It's far worse a one-winged cockatiel (birth-defect), but since she moults very well and is in great feather condition, I let her be. She shows no sign of pain or any difficulties, in fact she tries to fly all the time when she is scared and falls on the floor. She never hurt herself.
Oh yes.... and she has an attitude, especially when taking a nap.
My guess is... if your birdy doesn't have an infection or any further complications, should do fine on 1 leg.
Good luck for you buddy!

Hi!
Oscar's leg ended up becoming badly infected and was gangrene. The vet had to amputate his leg above the knee. He had no problem after surgery and almost seemed relieved to have the leg gone since it was hurting and hanging down.
He is doing great now and you wouldn't even know that he is missing a leg. He is back with his mate and he has no problem perching, flying and hopping around the bottom.
I am glad that everything turned out okay and that he recovered so well.
