I have a large indoor cage with two pairs of cockatiels and a pair of Kakarikis, and they all lived happily, however, recently my female kaki has turned quite aggresive and is damaging the cockatiels,I put a nesting box on the side of the cage thinking that would be the answer, however now she spends all her time sitting in it screeching-the male shows no interest at all-when she does come out she chases one of the male cockatiels around the cage and is starting to inflict some damage on him,. Any ideas please as to whats going on ???

The nesting box will only make things much worse...
When a female comes out of her nest she is very often far more agressive than the male...
She most problerly , before the nesting box, was having a few early hormones to go to nest, espec if a male around....Even thu no nesting boxes if those hormones are stimulated she will get terrorial to a area in the cage, may not be obvious....this terrority is basically an area quite a few meters in direct line of sight.

If she is not intimidating /attacking the male kakariki, althu there is no obvious 'thing' between them, it doesnt mean that there is none.
Keep in mind it generally the female bird that chooses/ approves the male, not the other way around.

How big is the "large indoor cage " ?
I do/would not mix 4 to 6 birds like that in anything smaller than approx 1.2M deep x 2.4M wide, 1.8M High..anything smaller entails far too much maintaince to keep pollution levels dowm...and would never consider breeding mixed like that.

Soln.
1/ Remove the teils to a smaller cage....and let the kakariki breed
2/Divide the flight with a solid folding wall /door to stop line of sight to nesting boxes.
3/Build another Community flight, if thinking of breeding ..put the 'teils in it and also used as a 'holding flight ' for the off spring.

Thanks steptoe. Yes i guess the cage dimentions are about the size you suggest,I've taken the female kakariki out into a seperate cage for a couple of days-to give the other birds a rest. I've also removed the nesting box from the main cage. If she's hormonal is there anything I can do-keep it clean please-for her,how long does the breeding/hormonal period last at this time of year??
