i have a female kak who is 18 months old. she has been by herself since i bought her. am seriously thinking about getting her a friend but dont know if i should or how she would react. should i get another female or a male? how should i introduce them? any advice greatly appreciated.
If you get a male...she will become 'remote' as the male becomes very defensive of the female, to the extent the female is only allowed to do stuff with 'permission.'
A females they will team up, and again much of your interaction will leason.
Generally a female makes a better bond with a male owner and visa versa with a female owner...same applies to most pets, and cats dogs etc.
Intro9ducing can be a hit and miss affair..much depends on yoyur relationship with the bird, how terroriial it is about its cage.....and time of day....
Be prepared of jeliosy issues and maybe even having to get a new cage ...
This is the estentual part
am seriously thinking about getting her a friend but dont know if i should
The question really is why? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Our parrots (Bob) we co habot with, like one does with a cat or dog.
The cage is never closed, even on holiday...wings are never clipped.
In the last 5 or 6 yrs, it has been closed 2x
1/we had a wedding her so closed for about 3 hrs
2/We where moving house around 100 miles, so locked him in the cage in the car for the trip.
One thing we do notice, Bob spends a lot, most of his time either in or on his cage....usually wanders thru the previous nights food scraps in the morning, picks up scraps when dinner is being prepared....and if anyone put something on the shelves in the kotchen that are not meant to be there...throws it on the floor.
He also comes out to feed....has a stand with perch and veggie/seed bowls each end.
Bob has been on his own for all that time....till a couple months ago when we had to hand wean another king parrot....so he is showing her the ropes.
Even so they still spend most of their day time on or in their cages sleeping pruning, admireing themslves in the mittor or ripping up rolled up newspaper....
Dont get carried away with toys...they are expenive pretty colours so WE will thing they are nice and WE will buy them.
A fork, rolled up paper, a sheet of paper, a can opener, screw driver, 1/4" socket set ratchet, a few sockets......get the idea? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
