We have button quail as little vaccuum cleaners in most of our flights.
The chicks feed themselves but hang around mum and dad.
Quail are like hens..chick hatches gets it feet then starts feeding off the ground......parents are deffensive thu more make out have a broken wing and distract any threat.

We have thought about keeping quail but have heard they can be noisy? Or is it just males / certain types?

Laughing If you've ever seen that ol' Disney film, Robin Hood, then the bit where the Buzzard walks the yard and yells,"All well at 9 o'clock!" is about as noisy as they get....tis not often -and short..reminds me of that every time they they sound off-makes me laugh anyhow

My best pair of Conures(Pineapple) Were hand tamed and. produced 5
beautiful babies at 12 mo. of age. It also seems the babies take their clues from the parents behaviour. jump

I try to use the best from both sides - Hand raised vs. Avairy reared.

I allow the parants to raise their chicks all the way, but I take the chicks out of the nesting box once every day (from 3 weeks old) to hand feed them.
This gives u Kikies that have both a natural social behavour and are tame-easy to handle.

I can only se one case that strictly Avairy reared (with no or very litle human contact) would be best - that is if u are to releese captive birds into the wild.

Hand raising all the way - if u have no parant birds, or if the purpouse is to produce a lot of offspring from a thretend specis (removing eggs to hand raise, allowing the hen to lay more eggs). But in this case it would be better with fosterparants from a close related speces.

To me: Linebreeding=inbreeding. Not something I want to do (we all ready have too much inbreeding in our captive population and not a wide genetic base)
You can establish desirable traits trough selective breeding (without getting the UN-desirable traits). Yes! It takes a litle longer time - but the result is far better!

Yes another way we had done resently is just as they come out of the nest, do the wean feeding by hand.

No..in practice it doesnt matter....hand feed as you do, weaning, even surrodate parents all work just as well...the thing with parrots is they have their basic instinct, then on top of that they have an integence they us to learn, remeber and adapt in their release enviroment, very successfully....what is important is their abity to raise chicks ..not be totally hand raised... Claasic example is the Orange kakariki captive release program....ring necks now pests in many parts of the world, rosella and lorros in the wild in NZ

The problem is not the inbreeding, but rather the very undisplined and offen greedy manner it is done in.
Breeding like that requires holding lines for 3 or for generations, and slightest sign of -ve traits apperaer , no matter how good the birds are, the line destories back serveral generations.
But in practice very few breeders do that....they sell off 'pet' birds in the line, loose displine and keep a couple becuse they have something.....
And many do not introduce new blood into the line when they should....often because there is none to be sourced... and do not have the facities to hold so many for so many generations.
So I agree with you, except its not the process its how the process is administared.
