Hello there Sunderland!
I suggest a really good read up on here! Plenty advice on what to feed your birds.
As for the 'tired' thing- im not sure. My birds all sleep frequently thru the day off and on, the younger ones more than the elder ones. Is this what you mean?
As for food- Get as many different fruit and veg chopped up and in a bowl for them, with small pieces of meat too. See how it goes.
Mine hardly eat ANY seed, but I have a dish of about 8/10 different varieties for when they do fancy some.

Drop the citiric acid (orange) for now..there is more than enough in apple.
And high sugar fruits..like oranges peaches.
As Moko says above....run a forum search in the "quick search " block on the left for diet look for a thread something like "what do you feed your bids"
There are also several threads re weaning onto good diets.

Also of the species of birds we have sleep or rest during the day....except kakariki..the best they do is stop to pune feathers.

Hi Chris,

definitely as Sanjra says take a look around the forum. In each section there are a few posts on top that are very interesting about different stuff (diet, cages/aviaries, mutations, breeding etc...)
Make use of the quicksearch block on the left column, and feel free to post on old threads if you want to ask anything related to the topic.

Do you still keep cockatiels?

Cheers / Pablo

Welcome Chris.
I feed mine on a small amount of small parakeet mix BUT mainly apples ( i always take the pips out), grapes, gem lettuce, kiwi fruit, meal worms, dandilion leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, bashed chicken, pork bones etc. Also they have cuttle fish in the avairy and once a week i put them a small portion of hay in with them. Good luck with your kaks. Justine.

Hi Chris,

out of curiosity, do you keep the edged (dom. silver) mutation?

It was discovered in Scotland and I was wondering if it was a popular mutation over there or do you know any breeders that keep them.
I have been trying to find information about this mutation in the UK but it's not very easy to find info. on UK breeders/associations, other than English Budgies hehe
I was just curious that's all.

We'll be happy to see some pics of your cockatiel colonies, at least myself.

Cheers / Pablo

Dont worry about apple or pear pips...old wives tale...
run a forum search on that to.
We do not take what we are always told as gospel here.
We actually do stuff, like feed avocado, chocolate lots of stuff and found so many of these things are old wives tales, but also reconise that there is a basis of truth to them...

Salt on our evening meal is not posious,we actually need salt in our diet, (and arsenic) to be healthy...but eat a lot of salt or arsenic and depending on the quanty we will either die slow or quick...
Eat none and the same result.
See what I mean? again use the seach function.

A question to Steps, if I may:
Your birds REALLY dont sleep thru the day?
Mine have got themselves (chicks as well) into a solid routine of eat, preen, sleep, play....
They dont sleep for hours at a time, more like 10 or 15 minutes.
I thought this was normal til you said that above....??
:-S

Occassionally one my have a short snooze..
But the difference is most proberly the enviroment...
The number we have, calling between avaries...a cat or something strange fly over, warning calls go out ....and general inter action chatter...and there are about 9 or 10 pairs with chicks at the moment...or courting

At the moment lost count of the kakariki... 8, 4, 7, 8, 6, 6, 3, 20+...between 60 and 70 ....not counting kings crimsons etc.

Ah, thats okay then!
(Had a wee panic attack!)
The sleeps are more snoozes, and roughly every 3-4 hours.
Much more play, rummage, fly, dig, chew, climb, fly, splash, sunbathe, throw food about, fly, eat, scratch, preen..... You get the idea! :)

The guy I bought them off had them inb an outdoor flight before Xmas but when weather got bad he worried and took them into his livingroom
sooo,,,,, the weather the way it is and the fact they were brought in means they ar in my spare bedroom with 2 old budgies and a conure who is getting on in yrs fairly quiet
bur are in a sonia brass cage ( noway ideal) their outdoor home will be
indoor flight w16'' Dx24''xH36''
outdoor W24 x D36 xH6ft

1 seems to stay up on the perch and the other sleeps on the floor I suspect they are depressed to to lack of space

found some dried mealworms for wild birds are they ok

don't know about dried worms, but I think maybe it's not worth it as they are mostly the skins and fewish flesh. Not the same thing as live mealworms.
for animal protein I think it's better to give them a piece of bones+meat or a slice of boiled egg, a piece of your steak, etc...

I'm trying live mealworms and this time looks like I hit the nail, after a few days they have developed a taste for them.
If you can stand the guts of handling them, probably in a pet shop specialized in reptiles you can buy 50gr. or so.

*The mealworms thing is mostly a curiosity thing of myself, rather than just for the birds.

Cheers // P.

And the way kakariki go thru protein...ask the bos for a substanual raie d'oh!

Just dice up the stringy grisle bits in your steak, chopp up with a cleaver the KFC bones, the meat out of the left over chinese takeways, thecassole when visting your mum for dinner...
Its not just the meat..its the grisle , cartiage on the end of leg bones and chicken breast bones....AND the marrow out of the center of the bones.

AND feed to the rest of the parrots to...All our parrots get the same.

OK I get the size, dont fully understand the inside /outside??? separate flights or one for inside and totally diff for outside?
And Why....
Kakariki a extremely hardy...to the extent you may have to go out in witnrt and smash the ice off their water for them to get their early morning bath.....I kid you not on that one.
