Hi just bought a Kakariki as a companion for my lutino female. just wondering if any one can help me figure out what sex it is, i hope its a male then we can have babies
yes looks like it..check the yellow stripe under the wing..male faded and broken the female difinat solid stripe
The crown on the birs in the pick, very clean, one of the cleanest, showing nil sign of hybridisation ....very rare outside top breeders .... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Do you mean for a batch or batches per yr?
For a batch, she will lay between 4 and 12 eggs...number depends on age diet, genes....generaly 5 to 8 per batch, over 4 to 7 days.
She will not actually sit on them till all or nearly all are laid, then incubate so they all fertile eggs over a couple days.
A 70 to 80% 'strike rate' of eggs to raised adult weaned birds is a good level, any more is a fluke.
Per yr..given the correct consistant diet, nesting boxes, a pair will knock out around 6 to 9 batches per yr.
If not given the diet etc, the hen will get run down, sick and most proberly die withing a couple batches because egg bound.
What people do not consider when breeding is the space once the chicks come out and are being weaned, the holding flight one removes them to before one cant ID the parents reliably...ie the pink goes out of the beak and the iris forms.
We have 3 pair, who in the last 3 yrs have each produced over 110 eggs and over 90 adult birds.......EACH
1 pair has just gone back to nest laying, just raised 9 chicks...lost 1 to overcrowed nesting box...
Another pair, female sitting on eggs about to hatch any day, 7 chicks nearly weaned and ready to me moved to the holding flight, that has approx 18 kakariki in
3rd pair, 7 chicks weaned moved and hen sitting also expecting eggs to hatch any day.
And thats just the red crowns..... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
thanx for the info. its alot to think about. i have got a second large parrot cage in order to seperate the young from mum and dad. im not looking a t breeding fulltime so i would be looking at giving the hen considerable rest afterward.
I feed my birds on a parrot food mixture and they also have fresh fruit as a snack and millett spray. i also have grit available at all times. When you say consistant diet, is there something i should be giving them daily that i am not already doing?

ok i will defo increase the friut and veg and meat! i also have the calcium things in there too!
Iam completley new to this so i will take any advise given to me i have also spend hours looking the older posts, and finding it all very useful.
I have added some more pics of kiki. the more i look at other pics the more confused i get . is he defo a boy?
I cant get close enough yet to check under his wing and even if i did i dont have anything to compare it to.
YES! A darn sight more veg/fruit!
It is THE major part of their diet!
They are also carnivore, and eat meat, bones, cheese, eggs, etc.
Beautiful looking wild boy, by the way!
Thankyou, just thought i'd let you know that i have gone shopping for the birds and made them a diet consisting of :
apples, plums, orange, sweetcorn, dandelon leaves, cucumber, fresh mint, hard boiled egg including crushed up shell, carrots, kiwi, garden peas, cheese, ham and cooked minced beef.
I plan to make this their consistant diet including thier parrot mix seed, cuttle fish and millett spray.
They seem more interested in the seed at the moment, tho
they usually take days to weeks to get used to the new diet, but once they do they barely touch the dry seed.
Mine basically only attack the dry seed to eat the sunflower seeds and if there's no veggies/sprouts to eat. _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
And dont get carried away with buying a special diet...
The potato peelings, the cali and broccoli stems, silver beet stem, pumkin seeds and pumkin skin chopped up, the ends off the green beans...
ALL stuff left over from YOUR dinner preparation....
And the meat is just the bones, grisle, left overs from fast foods, chicken , cassotroles etc...
And thats the left overs from your dinner.
Every so often to wean them off junk food (100% seed) get them a bit hungery for a day or so. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Steps is, of course, right-
You dont have to go OTT with the buying stuff- *Although I must admit, I splash out and spend a few quid a week on stuff just for them! Its OUR treat.
(Like a whole fresh broc, or an extra corn on the cob, or a dragon fruit, or a mixed pummet of berries, a bone from the butchers....there isnt anything they WONT try once used to it!)
Oh, and kakariki love sprouted seed- try them!
They, and you, will get used to the diet- give it a bit of time. :-) _________________ ~~~Sanjra~~~
