Hi,
I am having a little trouble with my female Kakariki. Im no expert but i think she thinks that i am her mate as she does an elaborate mating call whenever i am near her. The problem is there is also a male Kakariki in with her and as far as i know they havent mated and he hardly pays any attention to her. Admittedly we are not around to watch them all day.
She has now layed eggs in her nesting box only i don't think they are fertilized!!
She used to lay eggs every so often even before we introduced the male. I am worried now that she is sitting on these eggs and hardly ever comes out!
If they have mated i should leave them, but if not should i remove them?
How can i tell if they are fertilized?
Is it ok to touch the eggs or will this distress her?
Thanx Elisa xx
search candling in the search bar to the left... im having the same problem with one pair funny u should say that as its the same hen who wriggles her bum
im leaving my pair as there is still a chance one or two eggs could be fertile and i also might need her to foster. _________________ thanks brucie.....
oh and dont worry about touching the eggs kaks are usually pretty easy going i tend to try and wait till she comes out and block the hole.... then be a as quick and as careful as possible... once done unblock the hole on she should continue as normal. _________________ thanks brucie.....
just ordered a candling lamp so fingers crossed. I have been keeping an eye on them but the make doesnt seem to feed the female and she just chases him around the cage!
Csndling how to is described in older posts
candling lamps are very strong , often a loy of heat...for being able to see shaddows in larger heavy egdd like hen eggs, pheasant....
kakariki eggs are far lighter shell. a reasonable, cheap pen light torch does the job very well.[/i] _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
i use a keyring torch with one L.E.D bulb i have to be in total darkness but with that i know its safe... as for he chasing him around my pair are exactly the same and with mine ive no worries yet has hes got no interest in her but if he does thats when i might have problems... my other pair are like loves young dream but that hen abandoned the eggs last time... so im leaving the other pair firstly because she's a good sitter and i could use her to foster and secondly because 1 or more of the 5 eggs she is sitting could be fertile you never know!!!! but it does sound like your pair have not paired up properly and also a chance your eggs are not fertile just keep this in mind . _________________ thanks brucie.....
