Real cool Manders!

My budgies and my kak play with the carbon version on the floor of their cage.
Sometimes wrap it around a perch, but never thought about using tube shapes
the way you do!

Applause

If you don't mind i'll pass your idea on to a Dutch forum.
I bett some will like this.

hi
absolutely brilliant ... do kaks burrow in the wild?
can anyone foresee any problems with burying a couple of lengths horizontally with a mound over the middle i'm building an avairy in 2 months time and i think this would look great and keep them occupied but i'm not sure weather it would be unsafe in any way.

There is a remote island where kakariki....Antipodes species from memery, dig holes (rather than burrow) under flax and tussock to nest, because there are no trees or other suitable places to nest.
Kakariki do a lot of digging, espec red crown, for grubs.

Bruce,

A mound as in hill? ( sorry, Dutch and trying here )
Sounds cool. Would you be able to reach into it yourself in case you need to?
Take it apart now and then to clean?
If they start bringing food in there...

Ok, I see :)

What about rain/ snow. Could you prevent it form coming in?
And you would not want to make it an ideal nesting/ hiding place for mice/ rats.

Not quashing your dream, just thinking out loud

Honestly

i was thinking of just straight lengths about a meter long to make tunnels.... make an improvised pipe cleaner out of a short broom handle then i can clear any build-up on a weekly or daily basis which ever it needs.... if rats/mice do try to get a foot hold i can just dino rod them from 1 end out the other... plus my next door neighbour has a working jack russell he uses it to help clear farms of their rodent problems its cats which will be the hardest thing to deal with when i build my aviary theres loads of them round here have u any tips on dealing with them?

Stray cats are a plague here as well.
Can't even leave a door or window open on a sunny day

Tried many, many things. from coffee grounds to wooden skewers.
But with little luck so far.
Someone gave me a tip just the other day. Cow menure .
By now I am desperate enough to go get me a bucket full of tiger shit from the ZOO nearby.

We had our own cat till she died at 18 yrs a few months back
A Blue russian, not a cuddly breed, a breed one more co habits with.
Being female and blue russian..fearless and takes on beats up everything....execcent hunters, but very soon learns not to worry avairies and the house parrots...an integent breed
Anyway She died and now we have a huge pride of neighbourhood cats, constantly chassing
UNTIL...noticed 1 big male (I think) when veiwing the CCTV cameras.....he has a patrol path around the house, taken over the a chair on the deck when no one is home,....used to attack scare the birds in the avairies, but just ignores them now. So I decided a couple weeks ago to just let him be, and it now very rare we see any other cats.

Rats mice...will never be an issue IF regular maintance is done...described in older posts.
If you have 60/70 parrots and go thru more than about 3 to 3.5 L of seed a week, either u have a vermin problem and/or not feeding enough veggies , protein and fruit.

We had a few cats here too, the kaks just ignored them and they couldnt get in the aviary so wasnt a big issue. Our chinchilla persian mostly ignores them and they ignore her. On the other hand we had a sparrow hawk take an interest a few times and flew at the wire, tried to get its feet through to grab a kak but couldnt, the kaks did react to that in a big way and made themselves scarce for several hours amidst of flurry of feahers and a lot of shouting, no real harm done but it sure woke them up.

A neighbours cat took interest in our avairies but dosn't any more. We use to wait for it to come on to our garden and let the dog out. It hasnt come back since. Our dog when we let her out she just chased it ( shes not aggresive). We have also got a local sparrow hawk that every now and again like to take a pot shot at our birds. One day i was walking past the shed to the birds and something "pushed" past me and then all i saw was yellow legs and claws. It did get stuck in the wire mesh for a second and then it was of. I don't know what scared my birds more the Hawk or me letting out a scream in fright.
