my young kaks have 9 eggs now its her first clutch and they seem naturals.
Im just alittle concerned .
Can anyone give me any advice as this is a first for me too.
I know to get another nest box .
Im not sure how long incubation is Im pretty sure the eggs are fertile as they mate every day even now .
but do I count the days from first egg laid ?
she hardly ever comes out of box he feeds her she comes out to get mated .
I check in the box every couple of days if I get the oppertunity and there are always more eggs .
Any advice appreciated
Thanks in advance!
incubation takes around 20-22 days, so my rule of thumb is 1 month after I see the first egg
(if I check the nest and see 3 eggs I calculate it´s been 5-6 days since the first one was laid, they lay every other day)
in any case, remember that mating doesn´t mean that eggs will be fertile, and fertile eggs do not mean chicks will hatch, and a chick that hatches doesn´t mean it will make it to weaning
I don´t mean to rain on your parade, but oftentimes when we breed for the first time we obviate something may go wrong.
But I wish you the best of luck, and be patient! _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
Get another nest box latest by the time the chicks have hatched.
Just leave them to it, espec if their 1st brood.
They lay for around a week 10 days....then incubate for around 22 days. It is not unknown to sit for longer than this, out to 28/30 days before all the eggs have hatched.
If none hatch we leave them till she abanons them, remove the eggs, clean the nesting box and replace nesting material..... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Hi thank you for your advice
Im going to sit tight now and hope for the best.
And hopefully we will have some chicks soon.
I`ll let you know how it goes
Thanks again
Only one chick out of all those eggs but it was lovely and sold straight away she is on eggs again now . But I do have a question I have more chicks by another pair of kaks sadly the dad died no idea why. But was hoping to hand rear/tame the chicks Is it ok to take them from mum now they are 5 weeks old ?? (dad died when they where 1 week old ) mum carried on feeding them and we kept a close eye on her. She has been a great mum . Also wondered if she would be ok if she was put in with the other birds in the aviary ? Should I get another cock for her ? Sorry its lots of advice needed just want to do the right thing by her.
Thanks in advance
sorry to reply so late, but yes the female should be ok to finish rearing those 5 week old chicks on her own, same as a single male would do.
Getting another cock, why not, just wait until the chicks are weaned and then introduce a new cock to her. Chances are they even breed straight away. _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
