Gee, we're being very careful - Keith has a form of rheumatoid arthritis that is wonderfully managed by an injection every two weeks - so much so you wouldn't know he was compromised. The problem though is that he is immune suppressed, so we're both going to get tested for TB. We've had Boo nearly 3 years however, and neither one of us has ever exhibited symptoms, and Dr Matieri said that there have been two cases where the avian TB infected a human, but they have to record it. It's not in his system, just the eyes, which, I guess, is part of his system. What I mean is that any other acid staining came up negative.
And Steptoe, give Bob a bit of time - I looked around, and there are cases of spontaneous blindness in birds from shock or a knock on the head or an infection. I really hope so - my heart goes out to you guys.
We put him down a couple days ago...
The catract was getting slightly bigger, was aparant the swelling from the glucoma was hurting, even with pain killers.
And such a sorry sight when he steps off the top of the cage, sort of hovers blind to the floor, totally disorintated....and trying to figure out which way back to the cage, find the stick ladder to climb back up.
The kitchen and dinning room is a big place to wander around aimlessly.
Bob was going to be blind period....yes the swelling would have gone down, paon gone, and yes we could have locked him in ther cage so he could find food, not get lost....
NO it is not the quality of life he has been used to....
Bird...his freind is pinning..... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I am so very sorry that you had to give Bob the final act of kindness.
I can and do normally handle doing this....but this time my Wife volunteered taking hin t the vet to be put down....unlike most animals...injection, he used a cabinet the whole cage went into, and turned a valve...
My wife said it was ideal for birds, and whwere aniimals need restrant..or could be stressed by handling.
So we have Bird..yep thats his/her name, a King parrot we introduced to Bob a couple months back....Avairy reared, needs taming....will feed from the hand, sometimes, and yep has free range of the house also.
Just co habit with him/her for now....
Thanks for the thoughts....

Been a long time; I just read through all of the posts from last June, and thank you again for all of your thoughtful advice. And poor Bob - I hope Bird is doing well.
We've been bopping along up here in Yellowknife - not such a bad winter. Only a few -30 and colder days which is amazing. On Feb 4 it was 2C, which doesn't happen.
And Boo - doing incredibly well! Only 4ish months to go with his medication and then down to Calgary for a check. All of his feathers have pretty much grown back around his eyes - little bit of skin showing, but that just makes him look a little bit more like other parrots with rings around their eyes. We're able to give him his medicine individually now - we don't have to both be in the bathroom trying to catch him etc. He's so good - we have to shut off the light and then he stays still, but we just scoop him up and give him the 3 syringes, then a sunflower seed, and he goes back to doing his thing.
The vet told us his behaviour might change, and it has completely. He's much more tame with us, and crazy active. He no longer goes to the front closet to sleep a number of times a day - I don't recall when I saw him in there last. He's very funny, and spends a lot more time on the ground exploring. We're very careful to check to see where he is when we come in now. He'll walk, yep, walk, right up to us and if we don't have anything for him, just turn around and meander away, usually tripping a little because his feet are SO big. That must be why they're called clown parrots. So he's doing well.
