Hi I purchase a kakariki around 1 month ago and need some advice.
I know nothing about birds at all, and just brought my bird from the local pet shop.
When i first brought her the first week she started to come to my hand to eat dried fruit, which i thought was pretty cool. However she then started to moult and so thought it could be mites, so brought some mite spray.
Since then she won't let anybody near her, and is still moulting.
Now in the last few days she has started laying eggs, first few broke as she layed them out of the cage, but have one in the cage.
Have i done anything wrong, and what do i do now?
I expect someone else can give u more advice, but i have a kakariki who i've had for a year and went through a similar thing with her.
my kakariki started scratching and moulting and i too bought a mite spray, which she hated but got over it, and it wasnt doing any good.
she is my first bird too so to be on the safe side we took her to a vet, and it turned out to be just ordinary moulting, nothing to worry about, but mine also had a bald stomach and he said that was because she had gone over the top with getting ready to sit on her eggs. after a while her feathers grew back.
she started laying eggs that same day, and we were told to leave them in for her, because if we took them out, she might keep replacing them and wear herself out. so thats what we did. you probably should try that, but for my kakariki once shes laid them she takes no real notice in them.
keep offering her treats by hand when you go to her and she should start coming to you again.
as i say, thats just what happened with my kakariki, i expect someone else can give u more help.
Nope...when moulting they scratch prune the 'husks' off the feathers.
If u are a guy, about the 4th day not having a shave beard gets ichy, then once a liitle groth is on it stops...same sort of thing.
Mites...run a forum search from the quick search block to the left. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
