ive seen goji berries for sale on several bird food sites.... but have also read not to feed too many as they are high in iron wich is not good for parrots..... i dont feed them ....but have thought about adding a few to the mix to see if they like them..... as for the NZ spinich... ive never heard of it ..... _________________ May........
NZ Spinach..great stuff been feeding that for years now....NZ spinach is like pop eye spinach on steriods.

Our parrots love figs..given in season ..thu bit of a race between the wild fantails tuis thrushes , blackbirds and whites and me picking off the tree ....then there is the race for me to eat them between the tree and the avairies. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I have not tried figs with my birds, they end up in my tummy before they are given a chance.
Sorry but they are too good to share. _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
mine love dried figs..... we dont get many fig trees over here although my dad has a few ..... and fresh figs are quite expensive. i have just frozen a box full of blackberries ....for the birds..... i have a real hunter gatherer urge to store stuff for winter at the mo _________________ May........
you know... I know it's a good thing for humans to eat what season provides.
My guess is it's the same with birds.
NZ has the same seasons as Europe. Spring, summer, fall, winter... with diff things growing each season.
So IF our european kakariki still have any NZ instincts left, they dont expect summerfood in winter.
IF they don't have such instinct.. they are European enough to eat what european seasons provide. Again, no summerfruit/ fall fruit in winter.
Why store? Why not just give them from what you eat in winter?
.... yeah that makes sence.... but theres nothing much around here in winter.... thats free just sitting there in the hedge row waiting to be picked..... i like free stuff :) i dont know what wild winter food they would have in NZ tho... is there a lot of pine cones? _________________ May........
Dryied fruit..not good oce dried the sugar content become very concentrated, espec when compared to their body mass and the amount of excersise in capitivity...espec fruit that is high in sugar to start with.

Yes BUT..keep in mind te natural native berries, /fruits/seeds etc that exist in other countries, espec Europe, did not exist in NZ....and tend to be very low in sugars....which leads us to the basic reason why kakariki are now endangered in the wild...
They came out of the foressts in huge numbers, loving the high sugar of the fruits veggies and grain of the early settlers....so was a matter of who got fat or who died of starvation
I have done many yrs of trials on high sugar foods with my kakariki over many generations.....something that im keeping close to the chest...but I do suggest atay away from all high sugar foods....except the occassion fig and perssium, plum, grape
Also ever noticed the birds get the the fruit on the tree before it is just ripe enough for use to eat...still firm, a bit bitter?
The sugar content is still low....yet we feed 'ripe' suitable for humans high sugar????
Pigs and mammals tend to eat the fruit that has freshly fallen from the tree. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
