Hi all,
Any of you know if its safe to feed them Goji berries and New Zealand Spinach ( tetragonia)

Goji berries are becoming a hype here in the Netherlands. I seldom trust pro hype info, that's why I much rather ask you guys.

I came a cross the NZ spinach this morning. Bought some of it... but found out it is not really spinach is it?

Both the berries and the spinach are a success.

They are now sampling figs and carambola (star fruit). And there is a cherimoya ripening for them to eat on the fruit dish.

I have not tried figs with my birds, they end up in my tummy before they are given a chance.
Sorry but they are too good to share.

you know... I know it's a good thing for humans to eat what season provides.
My guess is it's the same with birds.

NZ has the same seasons as Europe. Spring, summer, fall, winter... with diff things growing each season.
So IF our european kakariki still have any NZ instincts left, they dont expect summerfood in winter.
IF they don't have such instinct.. they are European enough to eat what european seasons provide. Again, no summerfruit/ fall fruit in winter.

Why store? Why not just give them from what you eat in winter?

Dryied fruit..not good oce dried the sugar content become very concentrated, espec when compared to their body mass and the amount of excersise in capitivity...espec fruit that is high in sugar to start with.

Yes BUT..keep in mind te natural native berries, /fruits/seeds etc that exist in other countries, espec Europe, did not exist in NZ....and tend to be very low in sugars....which leads us to the basic reason why kakariki are now endangered in the wild...
They came out of the foressts in huge numbers, loving the high sugar of the fruits veggies and grain of the early settlers....so was a matter of who got fat or who died of starvation Shocked

I have done many yrs of trials on high sugar foods with my kakariki over many generations.....something that im keeping close to the chest...but I do suggest atay away from all high sugar foods....except the occassion fig and perssium, plum, grape
Also ever noticed the birds get the the fruit on the tree before it is just ripe enough for use to eat...still firm, a bit bitter?
The sugar content is still low....yet we feed 'ripe' suitable for humans high sugar????
Pigs and mammals tend to eat the fruit that has freshly fallen from the tree.
