Thanks May - I truly can't wait either - so excited and so worried about them all - makes me laugh at the dreams I am having - takes me back to when I started breeding budgies and in my dreams there were hatching mutant nija budgies - now it is kakarikis - ha ha
Some one asked me if Oscar was a budgie when we were sat outside at the pub the other day (erm.... we were harness training ) but if a kakariki was a budgie it would definatley be a mutant ninja one ....
will try get some pics tomorrow so we can compair fluff _________________ May........
Robohip,
I see nothing wrong with the chick, but I'm not very experienced, maybe someone else in the forum can give you a tip.
Maybe it's because I'm "used" to it, but once in a while you see a chick with stunned growth or maybe die... I don't give it too much importance.
If you have all the chicks die within days then you have a problem... 1 chick out of 4-5... I would say it's normal.
I usually mention about a French cockatiel breeder, Thierry Duliere, he breeds 200+ cockatiels each year, some are awesome, many are normal birds, a few are stunned, a few die (be it shortly after weaning, or in the nest, or they are not even able to hatch).
And then of course you must take into account the fact that many of us in Europe have kakariki that are not selective bred for good traits (vigor, fertility, feather quality, disease resistance, etc...).
I hope this helps somehow.

Thought is anything stood out that I was doing wrong I could fix it - it threw me because I could see no defect either.
The others and parents are all doing well today, guess I may have to chalk this up to experience and hopefully the other 4 and 2 left to hatch will all be fine
awwww it doesnt look like anything is wrong tho ....but think you have to look at it as survival of the fittest... the one i had die looked a bit brused like it had been stood on or something and Big looked like she was being a bit rough i think she has got the hang of it a bit better now tho fingers crossed all the others will be fine. I might have 1 more hatch but the other eggs look like they arnt fertile _________________ May........

Out of maybe around 1000 chicks had we have had 3 or maybe 4 die..
These we put down to the blood lines and generations of avairy , not hand reared birds.
Nature looks after its own...capitive breeders tend to maximise there success....so I agree with Pab, Birds breed there have been slective breed for different trates.
A thought... u have heard of those with 'green fingers' in the garden right?
99% of the green fingers is a gardener simply pulls out or trims off what has died, be it a grown plant or a seedling.....add to that they tend to maintain water far more consistantly....where as the ordinary what a bee gardner is far more 'relaxed'
The Green finger person talks about their success and no one sees their dead plants.
Not much different with birds.
Owe we have a lot of wild bird nests in the garden....it is very suprising when one spends real time maintance in the garden to number of dead young ckicks on the ground, that I very much suspect is not much different to what u have, except the parents throw the dead out. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
your case is slightly different, as you have a very strong strain, you have made ruthless culling, and you don't breed mutations.
I don't know the origins of your birds, but probably they are closer to original wild birds than those we have in Europe?
btw... how long have u been breeding these ugly green birds?
i had another fluffy hatch today so 3 now i didnt manage to get any pics tho... hopefully tomorrow .... nothing yet in the other nest box but its not too late yet _________________ May........
i had a good look at my baby fluffsters today... they all seem ok although the biggest one has food stuck on its beak... might have to try get it off but didnt want to hurt it... they all have food in their crops and quite strong
between us we are having a bit of a roller coaster........ i now have another problem.... ive not been handling these chicks as much as although big is quite tame and friendly its her first chicks.... i noticed to start off she seemed quite rough with the chicks and we had the 1st one dye......in the pics above the biggest chick had food stuck on its beak..... well it was still there this am and i decided id have to do something about it so took the chick out and bathed its beak in warm water with cotton wool..... after a while the lump just dropped off.... but......... there was no beak underneath so the chick only has half a lower mandible ...... and im thinking i will probably have to put it down....... i think the beaks are quite soft to start off and think Big may have damaged it....and the food ball built up because it was damaged.......
I got steps words ringing round my head.... "do it once and do it right!" _________________ May........
