Hi all I wonder if anyone can shed any light. i have a pair of kaks my female was 4months old and for the past couple of days seemed to be spending most of her time on the bottom of the cage. eating and drinking fine but sleeping a lot. today she seemed listless, i separated her into another cage and drip fed her water and syringed food to make sure she was eating, on picking her up she was listless and sleepy. I rang the vet and she thought she may have an egg stuck she told me to hold her over hot steam froma bowl of water for a few minutes and she said that would loosen the egg (id#f that was what it was). I did as she asked and then put her back in her cage in some warm bedding she just lay there, her breathing seemed fine and then all of a sudden she rolled over as if she was having a fit and died . Im gutted . has anyone experienced this and do you know what the cause is.
she was in my indoor avary along with my three cockatiels they all got along great. i didnt think that they mates so early in their lives and havent seen anything going on im at a loss if anyone can help I would be very grateful
thankyou
karen
Im not sure as to what u are saying she was egg bound and the egg was realesed..then died?
If She was egg bound for any length of time the shell hardens and there is great danger of it breaking inside and/or if doesnt break a danger of ruptiing tissue inside as released..both normally fatal...the latter usually the case with a young hen who has not laid before.
Normally not just the steam metod but injecting oil in to the officaface and sunstantual massage
What causes egg binding is usually diet diet, a lack of calcuim and phospourus....... _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
sad for you .... its hard when this happens espcially when you dont know why..... but it could be loads of things that has caused it. if you read up on here about feeding and how to avoide illness ie worms...mites..poisoning..infections etc... that might help narrow it down a bit. The other thing is there is congenital defects which are there from birth due to too much inbreeding and poor stock ....this can be heart, liver problems. the other thing is that birds are quite good at faking not being ill when they are .... to try persuade preditors they arnt an easy target. they also have such a high metabolism that when things effect them it happens quick. Personally i have never had an egg bound hen... so i cant help there.
and to the Kakarikie family here...shame its on a sad note. _________________ May........

thankyou for replying she did not pass the egg as the vet told me to leave her for ten minute intervals and as i left the first time in the cage she didnt make the next steam. her diet was very good as is all of my birds maybe it is because she was so young and hadnt laid before? still upsetting though they become part of the family

thankyou for the and reply Bonnie had a very good diet and she was hand reared from a reputable breeder, maybe because she was so young and hadnt laid before . I am going to see the breeder tomorrow to see what she thinks
We Start to pair our breeding stock up at around 3 months....
Our birds are all avairy breed an a diet as described in the "what do you feed... thread.
Over a 1000 heathy adults raised we have had 2 egg bound females in over 10 yrs...both because of other reasons. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
