Been re reading..
When the hen is looking after young chicks she doesnt move aroud very much (CCTV observation ) When the nest is opened hens always intially get a bit panacky till sort out what is happeng....
I again suggest..leave them alone , or at least till the are older larger. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
i dont usually open the nest box when she is in there.... the one that died i found when i looked in when she was out of the box.... after that i did peep in a few times while she was in there as i was worried about how the other died and notice she was being quite rough while feeding even looked like she was biting its head ..... but she didnt get all jumpy or squawkey at me.... i feel really crap about the whole thing wondering if the others will be ok.
So only 2 chicks now..... my son wouldnt let me do it .... he did it properly and quickly.....n gave me a hug _________________ May........
So sorry that you have gone through that - only ever had a deformed beak on a budgie before and that was due to food build up and me not paying enough attention - was when I forst started breeding budgies - 'Pug' as she is fondly known as lives a wonderful life but it was her uppermandible that is squiffy
Sry but ,,being blunt u are not being far on yourself or anything
The chances are its just nature looking after its self....
If breeders took that attitude we would not have any capitive animals at all.
We are now so isloated away in our cosy little PC protected homes our socitery has no basic concepts of nature other than isltate stuff one happens to read or see on discoery channel...but experiance personally people go way over board ....
More people need to get out and track down hunt /shoot their food..then cut it up .......get back to reality of some sort...
Sry a bit blunt , but all I see is someone kicking themselves for no real logical reason. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
A couple of questions if I may - the eldest 2 (both gorgeous pieds) are starting to feather up nicely.
First chick hatched 27th September so is now 3 weeks and the youngest hatched 9th October so is 9 days old.
When should I make a 2nd nest box available - also a nestbox full of fuzzies and mum - it is full of poop, would I be able to clean the nestbox out or would that be detrimental?
Think like this..these birds as a species have survived and adapted over 100s of 1000s of years....nesting under plants to holes in trees, and they dont use fresh clean shavings.....they dont have bright lights switching on and off with youg chicks that their eyes are still devalopig, they dont get handles and forced in to unnatural postions and force to use legs with bones and muscles not devaloped......
Let nature do the job....
I have a quick check in nesting boxes when in avaires once a week.
If the hen is out....and i note here when chicks are that young she rearly isnt out....I will count not touch chicks...if she is in I just make sure she is alive.
I will handle chicks as the start to show adult feathers, check sex legs etc.
I have had, a few months back, a leak in the roof over winter, which ran down a wall into a nesting box....and had been leaking for a while and i did not know about it ...it must have been doing so while the hen was still sitting on eggs, and at this stage the chicks where just showing pin feathers.
I was thinking , this is one compiited hen....so I moved her over to check the chicks...the nesting material was soaking, and the hen was so committed the flight feathers on one side had rotted away....
I did not disturb her.....I thtu in some fresh dry nesting materal, moved the nesting box about a foot, and left them to it.
She has drown new feathers now, the chicks raised ans weaned nps and she is raising another batch of chicks. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
