When I started this site, I had know idea of how wide spread Kakariki where thru the world, then to find out there are so many devoted pet owners.

As far as I know there are a few Kea parrots, some Kiwi and maybe some pukeko in Zoos.
Please let us know if you keep them or know of others in clubs etc that do?
Almost the parrots

yes, I think Pablo commented a while back that kea and maybe kaka where avalible in western europe, but at a huge price, and depened very much on who you know, as not common.
The kea and the kaka, (cousin species) are reputed to be the most intellegent of all birds after some serious study in France a few yrs ago.
The abilty to work naturally as a team and communicate to solve problems.
The abiity to work out complex problems individually and as a team, and to use tools to do so...and the speed at which they can do so.

A search on u tube on the French reasearch may turn up some footage.
It is jaw dropping.

Sounds like prices are a lot higher in NZ. Pet shop price here for an african grey is about 850£. I've seen mcaws advertised for about a thousand, and at some auctions both can be had a lot cheaper.

Then again we are in a godawfull recession... Think

hi!

kea are awesomely expensive for European standards.
3-4k € and not easy to come by. I wonder how easily they breed in captivity.
On top of that, you have to add a solid aviary.

I have not ever seen any pics or any info. about captive kaka in Europe. I have neither seen any info or gossip about orange fronted parakeets in Europe.

Macaws... depends on the species. Blue and gold are relatively "cheap" 1k-1,5k €, but scarlets and green winged are more expensive, 2k€, females even more expensive.
Hyacinth as far as I know are on the 10-15k € mark.

In Netherlands they are even cheaper, and at vogelarena I have seen ads asking 400-500€ for african greys.

I find it surprising that certain parrot species are so expensive over there in NZ, it's really crazy. Maybe is it because importing has been banned for much longer than here in Europe?

I think until early 2000s it was possible to import parrots from Africa and South America into Europe.

The last bird to be imported was in the early 80s I belive, thu we do have a thriving export niche market of exporting exortic birds.

And yes kea need a big avariy, huge on most of our stands, at least the size of my holding flight....AND metal pipe framing with heavier than normal chain link mesh....
A couple can damn near dismantle hub caps , aerials all body rubber, trim from a car in minutes...then proceed to punture the tyres for entertainment.
Its not just there strength but the intelegence to use it best.

Steps,

what exotic birds do you export from NZ?

Kea must be an amazing bird to keep and breed. They can probably surprise you everyday with something new.

Best would be what doesnt get exported and that just leaves native to NZ
