I apologize about the photo quality, I had to crop a lot in order to upload and the pictures were taken with my phone.

My first impression was a pied but it looks like the green has some masking effect on the red frontal band and the red spots behind the eye. It intrigues me. Could you post some higher quality pics?

I hope this picture is a better view. I am curious to know what she is.

It's a recessive pied female, probably combined with dominant pied. The high amount of pied and the black eyes (no iris) are characteristics of recessive pied.
A peculiarity is the dark frontal band above the nostrils which must be red.
@Steptoe: yes the crown is not a solid red. It demonstates it is a hybrid which is not uncommon. In fact it is nearly impossible to find specimen with a solid red.

It is quite hard to see in the pictures but she does have a dark reddish-brown iris of the eye. I can see it easily in person and you can see it faintly in the second to last picture i posted. Also she has red patches just under both of her wings, as well as dark green patches under her right wing and between both wings on her back. Upon futher examination, it looks to me like the frontal band just above her nares is both red and green mixed. I'm not sure if any of this is relevant, but I thought I'd mention it. Thank you for all of the info, you two have been very helpful.

Peter, I have seen a kakariki here in aus with the same dark frontal band . The bird had at least half of the red crown in a dark green almost black band above the cere. It also was a .yellow pied bird as in the picture. I think we need to be a bit carefull branding Bec or well marked pieds as hybrids because it is my experiance the pied gene plays havoc with the red of the crown area. though all the experts say pied does not alter red in a bird. I believe it can dilute the red quite dramatically in some birds as in the photo of Spree.

The one thing i am puzzled over are the red patches on her body just under each wing. Is this a normal thing for most Kakarikis to have?

Hi,

Included a pic of the iris of a recessive pied. The colour may vary from dark brown to black. It is related to the amount of pied in the plumage.

@Wyndara. The reduction of red psittacine is also a characteristic in Agapornis Roseicolli. However it only reduces the size of the mask. I can be wrong but I don't think that the crown has a red layer masking the yellow underneath. If there is a dillution I rather expect an homogeneous orange colouring of the crown instead of yellow feathers coming through. Something like in a Aqua mutation.

We held some hybrid s here some yrs ago, some of them appeared orange in the crown, but a closeup showed a close mixture of yellow and red feathers which from a distance appeared orange....
The orange band species is an orange feather band across the nose.

Peter, do you have any ideas on what the dark band in the crown could be?
