We have a pair of Kakarikis, they are about 18 months old, never bred yet. Recently we moved them into an aviary which contains a pair of plum heads, and princess parrots, and a sole red rump hen. None of the other birds have ever bred before. The Kakarikis are going in and out of all of the empty breeding boxes and making lots of noise and calls, but the strange thing is on Kakariki has bonded with the red rump hen and is often regurgitating food to her. Is this normal??

Some times a pair just are not interested in breeding...with each other...usually because to closely related, and this goes not just being say siblings , but that interbreeding goes back several generations... could be say a great grandfather but in essence both of the same blood lines

Ideally one lets a flock choose and pair off themselves...and when they do, the further the apart they are the more pairs will hook up, and produce far stronger off spring.
When breeders are selecting to breed traits down blood line, every so often they have to introduce new blood into that line.

or you may have 2 males and not know it.

If a male goes into 'breeding mode', and they is not another female around who is interested they may feed a mirror, or even their owners, anything that maybe be remotely receptive to their advances.
This is general for most species.

If the kakariki hook up, they will become rather intimidating to other birds in line of sight of the nesting box....other parrot species will go further.. like love birds and red rumps... next morning you check the flight and dead birds scattered around the floor.
Kakariki will get intimidating enough to make species like king parrots and crimsons back right off into a cnr... and stay there.
