I notice on most Web sites the Mutation colours such as Yellow,Cinnamon etc are only available on Red Fronteds. Is it not very common to have colours other than green on yellow fronted Kakarikis???
I know off the recessive yellow, fallow, cinnamon, pied and lutino? mutations. I only am sure that the recessive yellow is only seen at the yellowfronted. The rest of the mutations could been brought in by the redfronted.
Kakariki, do you know what I will get if I mate a normal Red Fronted to a Lutino Red Fronted? How many lutino, splits and normals? I have a lutino pair that are laying eggs but not incubating / fertilising well as only one out of 9 have hatched after two attempts. They have a further 5 eggs due to hatch later this week. If they don't all hatch, I am thinking of pairing them either with cinnamons or normals.

Peter, the best you can do is pair the lutino to the normals. All birds will be split to lutino. When you pair them to cinnamon you will get splits for cinnamon and lutino. Thats not a big problem but the youngs of them are no longer pure lutino but lutino cinnamon or lutino/cinnamon. After a few generations you wont be aible to determine whether they are split to cinnamon or not
Thanks for the advice. I have paired the Lutino male with a cinnamon female and the Lutino female with a normal male. The only adult birds I have spare without breaking up exiting pairs.
How well do Kakariki take to being split up and repaired once they have bonded in a pair? Anyone have anything to share about that?
So far have had a 1:3 problem with reds, trying a 2nd female then worked
Yellows had big problems with several pairs. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

I always have a lot of birds spare. When i want to change a pair I remove the male of a breeding pair when the chicks are about 4 weeks old. (I leave the female with a max of 4 chicks). At the same time I set a male apart in a cage nearby the female. After 2 weeks (chicks app 6 weeks old) I put the new male with the female and the chicks. When they like eachother the female wants to pair immediately. I've doen this about 15 times. In 12 cases there was no problem, in 3 cases the female didn't like the male. You can immediately try another male. Sometimes it takes 3 diffrent males before the female is pleased.

Could we have permission use the Geelkgl2.jpg and Kakcinn.jpg in the galley /mutations section? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
