Hi everyone, My 5 kak chicks are now about 3 weeks old and are just beginning to get their pin feathers through.I'm a bit concerned though as all 5 chicks are in a cockatiel box and its getting rather crowded. The mother doesnt go in there apart to feed them because its crowded.Im worried that as they get bigger and being in a smaller box that they will fall out premiturely. Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening,as this is my first attempt at breeding and think Ive been extremely lucky to still have all the chicks reach 3 weeks old. All chicks are in perfect health and get heaps of greens and meally worms each day, when will they start to fledge? Think Think Think duno duno

Princess,
Kakariki are fairly smart when it comes to keeping their young in line. I have never had a chick leave the nest early. The young seem to know when it is time. But if you are concerned perhaps try a larger box now that the birds are bigger. If you go to a bird shop I am sure you will be able to buy a box suitable for Indian Ringnecks. These are larger and deeper than the cockatiel boxes and there should be no problems with changing over the boxes. We do that as a matter of habit when the chicks reach the pin feather stage to stop the boxes becoming soiled and smelly. The parents wont mind either. It will be a while yet before they fledge as with that many chicks I would think one or two would be slightly behind the others in development. Your pair have a done a great job and you should be very proud of their efforts to date.

Thanks heaps will do that today. Yes I find myself extremely happy and proud of my first time parents on what they have achieved to date. To still have 5 chicks in a first clutch is very rewarding and promising,I must be doing something right hey?Once again and always thankyou for the advice. Applause Applause Applause
