My Kakarikis love veg and I'd like to offer them more. They eat broccoli, cress, peppers and cooked carrots at the moment. What other veg can I give them and do I have to cook any of it first?? I'd be devistated if I made them sick!
No avocado and no onions, that can make them sick.
Try fresh vegatables like carrots raw. I hardly ever give my birds cooked vegatables so see if yours will eat raw vegatables. I think that raw vegatables are more nutricious than cooked?
I give my birds all the vegatables you mentioned as well as cauliflower, green beans and lots of fruit. Have a look at the thread about feeding and take a lok at Steptoes gourmet food for kakariki. I think he employs a full time chef.
Im geeting real good with the chopping action dicing veggies....
We have started with kumra and potato peelings...a word of warning...dont give green coloured potato peels...they can make us sick and could birds../I dont know if it would and have not beed prepatred to try. The potato belongs to the Solarum family of plants..most of those are toxic.
Cauli..brocholi and even crlery we are finding the Kakairiki go for the stems and bases espec when diced...
Nearly all of the veggie waste from meal preparation no goes to the birds rather than the composte bins _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Thanks to you both for the reply. The only reason I cooked the carrots was because I was told they were toxic to Kaks if not cooked! I was misinformed on that then Thanks again.
I have been feeding raw carrots for two to three years, no problems yet. There are a lot of myths out there, the hard / impossible part is to separate the facts from the myths. If in doubt leave out.
Forgot to mention (thanks chef sorry Steps), my birds love celery too, I don't feed it that regularly but if there is some in the fridge, I always pinch some for the birds.
my guys have had pumpkin for the first time this week and it was a massive hit with toby.....he loved chewing on the seeds and ate a fair bit of the flesh.....it also had lots of claw marks in it when i got home so i think it got a good scratching too....LOL snow peas are a big fav of my guys and ofcourse a cob of corn I havent tryed them but apparently chilli is a big fav of all parrots
