But if Kakariki were a readily available/affordable bird in the market, wouldn't it help with conservation? Also there would be less need to destroy birds that DoC refuse to allow to be released?
Surely this could only be a plus?
Kakariki are readly avalable..and affordable Got a permit...how many do u want...market price is about 30 / $40 You can have them for free.

You should set up something like the Kakariki breeders association of New Zealand and with a group of like minded people you could build up enough support to be able to do something. Like have kakariki shows that are open to the public (not sure what the judges will be judging as NZ isn't allowed those fancy breeds ) to build up awareness and to incourage more people to take up the hobby. Eventually you will build up awareness and be able to have a partition that will have clout. Just a thought probably more acceptable to you than my political party idea .

Or maybe teach my self how make a web server, learn enough of Php coding and a web site, and Then actually purchase a register a URL.
Then a few Good Kakariki ppl would come along, start an International Community, they work hard at work hard at it, also use it for issues they have. Then I work hard at getting it to #1 on all search engines.
Take notice of those ppl who have the title founding members..they work hard.
Maybe also I

have done the usual stuff, emailed a few MPs, Ministers, Documentary programs, Forest And Bird, Green peace, WWF.....Kakariki don't have a movement yet.

I am working 12 /14 hrs days...breeding plus Admin a very active website, a family, and into car club and restoration....also I don't believe I am the right person to start an Association..
I'm sorry if I sound a little off, but it seems Kiwis are very keen on the statement "You should set up..." Instead of "I can start this..." " can I help with..." plus
there is not enough ppl YET in NZ who know what a Kakariki is.
Please I apologise If I sound blunt...
thats is another reason why I am not the right person. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I get the gist of it. You have already done enough for the cause given your ability and other responsibilities family being #1 on your list. I would give it ago though I don't breed kakes and secondly I'm going to uni soon and will have that as my #1 priority for the next three years or so. With the goal of working for DOC eventually(Quite ironic I think). But when my life settles down I might consider it. I will also have to take up breeding kakes and gain a bit of knowledge in their care. I also want to get Kakas though I will need to practice on another unsuspecting parrot species before them. Anyways there are links to this site from forest and bird I think thats how I found this site I think though I came accross it some years back. Is there a link from DOC's page? I'm not sure. Anyways we could incourage NZ members to add a link to this page from their signatures in other forums to increase awareness.
Something totally different. How do I contact DOC for things relevant to the conservation of native bird especially the Takahe? I can't find anything relevant on their page.

Things seem to work on a personal contact basis in DoC. The easiest way is to go to the publications section, and find the person who work on the species, then e-mail him/her directly.
I get the gist of it. You have already done enough for the cause...
U don't get the gist at all. I have not done enough, and have a lot more to do so my Grand Children (yet to be born ) will grow up to see Kakariki along side Tui, Wood Pigeon and Fantails.
To suggest that this site is the point at which I stop is wrong. I cant do it by myself
the ppl who take the time read this and similar threads here, believe what we can achieve this vision, and is for the good of Kakariki and NZ and a prepared to help great. If they are not prepared to help fine, we still need that active all important grass roots support.
Change has been attempted from within DoC, but if u have a family and a mortgage its not a good idea...DoC has a legislated monopoly on Conservation in NZ.
We have had DoC ppl here before, either they 'disappear' or end up describing the method of these issues being raised as "extremist union tactics" and "have to isolate themselves from this site" yet still believe in the issues and cant 'put their money where their mouth is' literally, otherwise their research funding and access will "dry up"
Change from bird societies in NZ is lathargec..kakariki are not generally considered 'exotic' and of enough interest as say a Macaw.
Suggestion Change thru Members of Parliament, Gov Ministers, Party leaders are either whitewashed or ignored...not enough public votes or interest I suppose.
Changes from Conservation Trusts/Societies who want kakariki and are approved to release yet cant source birds draws a blank thu initial interest is high. Go figure??
Changes thru media, again not enough public awareness of Kakariki, not important enough to further their careers. They just pass the buck from one team to the next or don't reply. Filming endangered NZ native birds being needlessly and legally killed seems to be a bit to hot for them yet it is a legal requirement based on misconceptions and ignorance within DoC of housing, releasing requirements of Kakariki
I and Kakariki breeders NOW need the ACTIVE support of ppl who have the contacts to enable the above mentioned ppl and organisation to get off their butt and also become pro active...Ring them. Email them, write to them. Got any media contacts...use them.
If our off shore members can do this on our behalf, should we not be proactive?
It is sad to say, but the current situation is NZers are supporting our off shore breeders/members in this issue...and not the other way around.
The issue of Private breeders of unfunded endangered species, WILL NOT GO AWAY.
Either one of 2 things will happen,.
There will be ppl who (are) dig their toes in and want to fight it out (they are the same ppl who would read this as a "threat or "blackmail" and are too shallow to see beyond)...then, later after much embarrassment, staff/policy changes and promotions of damn good grass roots DoC staff, then cooperation will take place amicably and in a manner that it should. This can get personal and dirty, and already has with some of the flack I and others already have taken. I am not new at taking on a Gov Dept, and things get very messy or raising and dealing with social issues.
Or
In the next few weeks, approaches and cooperation informal and constructive discussion could take place amicably and in a manner that it should with positive outcomes. Thu there are no signs of this to date.
The outcome will be the same either way , and the latter is far more the preferred option. Besides consider the great international credit to NZ and DoC if such Conservation policies where put in place, and the huge REAL advancement of unfunded of at risk species of this Country, and maybe other countries to. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
So what we gotta do is get this thing publicised. Perhaps if enough of us wrote into papers and the two news station etc. etc., we will be able to get this thing rolling.
Also what about the SPCA, wouldn't they be appalled at what Doc "forces" breeders to do?
Every little thing that we can do will help, but like I said before, we must ALL work TOGETHER.
Also what about the SPCA, wouldn't they be appalled at what Doc "forces" breeders to do?
The SPCA is concerned with animal welfare...of the Kakariki Breeders I know, keep very clean and health environments and Birds. A non issue.
As far as having to kill off birds, thu one of the most upsetting things we do, It is done quick and humanely, under conditions far more less stressful than commercial chickens farms, so again not an issue with the SPCA.

Remove the word perhaps, and YES
PS
Keep in mind this subject is not what this site is about...
It was created as a meeting place, of those interested in all aspects of Kakariki be it a pet, breeding, Conservation (this), hot weather, favotite foods and acclumishments of individaul members...Please see the news item on the front page. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
