Hello! We are new members here, but we have been reading the forums for awhile. We have two kakarikis in Meadowbrook USA. They are quite young although we can't be sure how young. We bought them from a man who didn't know much about them and they were terrified constantly in the early days. They've relaxed quite a lot since then. A couple of weeks ago the male starting making shrill noises followed by a click. We noticed also that his pupils would be quickly changing back and forth from normal to very small. He would also be nodding his head a lot. It was a little disconcerting, to be honest. Not only that, but it seemed to scare the female too. She'd run away from him.
Then, today the female did the same thing minus the clicks but including the strange pupils. Then she went and did a dance in front of the male. We think this pupil thing is about sexy. And we pray that the kakarikis are getting ready to get sexy now that they have enough hormones.

I dont think u have to go that far, He has already got in built systems for them to procreate
Sounds like the male was ready nut the female, be young whatever wasnt.
Now the female is ready and giving him the 'come on'
What for here to make small squeaky noises, almost like a a cat wimper.
Dont go close...this is the last stage before actual m8 ing.
We notice most Kakariki m8ing takes place between 11am and 1pm.

They do it as a m8ing thing, warning , calling female out of the nesting box to feed and even when sunbathing.
Its often combined wih lifting of the crest on the head (like the yellow feathers on a sulphur crested but not as noticable.
To get to know your birds, dont just listen for different calls, but large and very small changes in body language mean just as much.
Once u get an understaning of these , then u are able to comunicate with them.
Your posts on the forum have given us a wealth of kakariki know-how.
This is what we created the site for.
