My husband recently bought 2 Kaks at the local pet store- an impulsive purchase. Prior to this, we hadn't even heard of Kakarikis. The sales person assured him they were both boys, but as I have learned from your site, its very hard to tell. We call them Bubbles (all yellow) and Squeak (all green) I'm pretty sure now that Bubbles is a hen: much smaller than Squeak, barely 'speaks' and is totally submissive & shy. Squeak has been demonstrating mating behaviour and this morning climbed on Bubble's back! Not much happened, they may have been shy with hubbie and I staring.
We didn't intend to breed and now I don't know what to do. We are totally in love with them and I don't want to lose them or have them sad about anything. Also, I had thought maybe they were from the same parents, which can't be good.
I am sending a pic in a seperate submission.
thanks,
Bunny
Welcome
What to do? ....
In these forums you will find several others, who had the same predicament.
U can read what they did, direction they took, and some have updates which is real nice. I think u will find these of help.

I will leave that over to they guys who breed mutations.
If u use the search button above, and/or in the 'quick Search' block to the left... u can enter words that relate.... sort of what Google does but just this site. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I'm sorry I just find it very funny! Welcome to the world of buying birds! Hehe, sorry but I think any of us who have ever bought any species of bird have been through this! (except mine don't seem to want to breed! )
I think they'll be happy regardless of whether they actually produce eggs or not. I've found generally they are one of the happiest birds around so I wouldn't worry about that.
I too love all my guys & gals & wouldn't give any of them away for anything!
Well, its official. Bubbles and Squeak have fallen madly in love and are now mating practically every day. Although, I"m not sure how thats working, because they usually fall off the perch and then 'lose the mood'
Maybe they won't figure out that the floor would be much easier.
Seriously though, I"m dreading finding any eggs in the cage.
I guess my strategy for now will be 'wait and see'. If I do find an egg, should I put a nesting box in the cage? What would happen if I don't?
I assume that you still have the commercal dowel perches in the cage which are unsatisfactory for many reasons previously discussed in these forums
Should be used for firewood.
Replace with some natural branchs of varing sizes, you will then see them not loose their balance _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I noticed my guys "losing grip" too and I only have natural branches of differing sizes in the cage......i think maybe the hen wasnt hanging on as well as she should have LOL......it still seems to be a wobbley busness but they have it "together" a bit more now PMSL.....mine were mating for weeks and there were no eggs i only got eggs AFTER i put a nest box in....maybe if you dont put in a box they will get over it .....also maybe not helpful arent I
Birds mating does not guarantee that the hen will produce eggs. She must be in breeding condition for that to happen. If she decides the time is right she will lay her eggs in the seed tray if required. If you want to breed from your pairs then put in a nest box. If not remove the eggs as soon as they appear. Eventually the hen will abandon laying and life will return to normal once more.
If you have young hens or birds that have trouble gripping the perches simply place a flat piece of timber somewhere in the cage. This will allow the birds the chance to "connect" without any harm to the hen. Our birds often mate on top of the nest boxes or even inside them if they are looking for privacy.
