I am not sure if it normal or not but my hen has been acting strangely be fore she lays an egg........I first noticed it a few days ago (4 eggs at the time)....I was going to bed and I noticed she was on a perch and her wings were drooping.....she didnt look happy so i moved away and observed form a distance.....my male was trying to feed her and she was refusing........after about 20 mins i got really worried (egg binding).....so i got her out and rubbed some warm oil around her bottom....i could feel the egg but it was soft so i left her be......it the morning she was still on the perch but looking brighter......when i came home in my lunch break ythat day she was fine back to ormal and there were 5 eggs........sat night i had to go out and on my way out i noticed her wings were a bit droopy but had to go.....by morning she was fine and egg no 6.....now tonight its the same thing.....i am at a loss as to what to do.......she is eating and drinking.....but on a perch and wings down.....they are having liqid cal everyday plus egg and buiscut......lots of veggies as usual and protien (meal worms).....the house is warm (heater on) and they have plenty of water for humitity or what ever.......does anyone have suggestion.....is this normal.....am i doing something wrong......it is almost like she is labour or something.......

Not sure how you are administrating the liquid calcium but I am concerned that you may be overdoing it by providing so much. There is a far better product available which can be left in the cage in a small bowl. That way the hen (and cock) can eat as much as they need without overdoing it. We have found this to be a far safer method than using products that can be lethal in big doses.

If the hen is laying for the first time she may just be stretching new muscles and in time it will get easier for her. Keep an eye on her but dont interfere too much as you may scare her from sitting once she has laid. Sounds like she is just getting used to egg laying.

they are having liquid cal everyday plus egg and biscuit

I go along with Kaka-riki...we used to give Cal drops in the food. Now changed to power ca/vitamin/mineral supliment...thu this is still added t0o veggies every 2 to 3 days. Dosage is 4 to 6 pinches for 30 to 40 kakariki.
Personally I'm not a fan of egg or biscuits.
Egg we have tried and don't use anymore, but prefer lean meat and chop/chicken bones in the diet.
15 Kakariki with demolish a large cooked chicken carcase (left over after carving fro your dinner) in a couple hours.
Biskets...small cat biscuits, about 2 or 3 /per every 2 to 3 days as a treat.
Kakariki in the wild do not have access to dry biscuit type foods, it is all vegetation, berries, fruit and grubs,
Cider vinegar is added to veggies 1 cap full per 30 to 40 Kakariki every 2 to 4 days, in between the supplement power.
Fresh fruit, espec those high in iron, is also important. ie Fejoa, apple
4 Kakariki will demolish (with no leftovers) 2 to 4 large fejoa, 1 apples in a day, supplied each every 2nd day...plus fresh figs, tomato, fuchsia, manuka, pittisporum, puriri berries, rose hips and other treat pieces

Yes ..The level varies between pairs, I believe if u get a pair that a re particularly suited to each other (usually when they have chosen a m8 themselves, the commitment between them is very intense, to the extent one observers with absolute amazement that birds react at this level.
It also influence the condition of off spring..if the females is smallish, chicks tend to be very healthy, large, and socialise better in a flock.

Don't right them off..particularily in summer our hens will spend little time on the eggs until the last couple eggs are laid...5 or 6 out of 8 eggs hatch (far less, sometimes none if 1st batch of eggs thu)

I also go along with Kaka-rikis comm

LOL I dont even know what some of that stuff

These are plants /trees growing in our gardens, most of those are NZ native trees/plants, a sample selection of natives we feed to our Kakariki, as they would feed in the wild NZ bush.
