Hi everyone,

I firstly want to say what a great forum you have going here, I love it!!
I have just spent the last hour or so reading as many of the threads I could. I am planning on buying a kakariki and although I have never owned a bird before as a vet nurse I have looked after many including fostering a macaw for a while. I have spent the last 6 months or so researching into various birds to make sure I am getting the right one for me (although after having lived in NZ for a year I was slightly biased towards kikes). I decided about 3 months ago that that is what I want and spent the time since trying to do more specific research and now I feel that I am fully prepared for bringing a lovely little kakariki into my family. I have bought a huuuge cage and have everything ready, I plan to bring my bird home in a couple of weeks.

So...I wanted to ask if anyone has any advice that I may not have come across so far.
I mainly need advice on how to introduce my new bird to my dogs. I have two and they are great with little critters being around the place, they were 100% scared of the macaw I looked after and stayed away from him but kikes are much smaller and I will want to have him spend loads of time outside his cage obviously...the thing that I am worried about is that I have read quite a few times that kikes have weak hearts or in other words stress effects them badly, so I dont want him to get too stressed when seeing my dogs for the first time and in the first few weeks. I will obviously be keeping the dogs away at first and letting them get to know each other very slowly but I was wondering if anyone knows of any special little tricks you can use to keep your bird calm, any noises you can make to soothe him?? anything like that would be great!!
any hints and tips in general would be greatly appreciated!

anyway...rambled on enough (just so excited!!)
Thanks in advance for any replies thumb

Oh I just wanted to add (sorry) that I have been planning on not clipping his wings as I believe that its cruel to take away its main form of exercise and defense (especially if I have dogs). However, I have read whilst doing al lmy research that if you are keeping any parrot/parakeet as a pet inside the house that it is essential to clip his wings so as to avoid dominance issues. Harry the macaw I looked after did not have his clipped and loved nothing more than flying around the place and I never had any real problems with him (nothing that a bit of patience and understanding wouldnt fix anyway), although he wasn't mine and had already been mostly trained by someone else but then again he was only 2 at the time.....Anyway I am waffling again.... any thoughts on the wing clipping??

Thanks again

It is Believed (?) that in breeding can cause this, even then Kakariki are NOT stress-able Very easy...stressed birds pluck feathers, I have seen it, in some very old birds from conditions that are unimaginable...only then.
We ship them fly them from end to end of countries and continents without problems.
Couple dogs..never done it but if one was sensible, let them get to know each other, so they don't see a threat from each other..build on eaches curiuosty.....dont see a problem
Kakariki are a strong, extremely active all day, curiousosity, hypo active, independent natured bird....reputation for bad heart, or similar just doesn't wash water does it?

To put bluntly...clipping is for the convenience and insecurity the owner, nothing more. There is a good thread here discussing this somewhere, and another how to clean up behind them signlol

Imagine a highly active tiny macaw, with personality.

I personally would never clip my kak again I did it once and he was miserable........if you managed to get a HR one they would be plenty friendly enough already.I had a male first as a pet and recently got a female as a mate for him........I have found the female a little bit friendlier and less skittish so duno I really dont think it makes a difference with the kakarikis as to which sex they are....there are many threads in the pet section about alot of the issues you will prob come up against and also on their diet.......They LOVE their food

Thank you very much guys. I know what you mean about the heart and stress issue, I did think it a bit strange for such curous birds but I read it a few times on various sights (I know this doesn't make it true) and just thought I would ask your opinion as Kakariki owners.
I also came across A LOT that kakariki is meant to mean "little parrot" in maori, I know that this is not true as little is iti and kariki means green. So, I know that it in fact means green parrot but it doesnt stop 20 websites from putting it on there! Hehe I think its quite funny actually because you only have to go to a translator site and type in little parrot and green to find out!!

U may notice the translation has not been dealt with here
Maori has a problem
1/Orginal Maori varies from district to district
2/Then there is 'University Moari' where the PC ppl have decided to expand and standardise
3/And the teaching of 2. at different localtions also has dofferences
4/As far I can find out from those who know Univeristy Maori, ask them Kakatiki and they translate simply as "green"
6/Ask a Traditional Old Maori who only knows traditional Maori and they translate as "Little green bird"....attemps at Scienfic definition was not make between species.
7/Ask a University Moari if they have seen a Kakariki and they say "no, what is it" Then when its explain as native parrot, and they inteligently describe a non native Rosella, with great authority !!!
8/Ask an old traditional Moari what a Kakariki is and they say " I havent seen on since I was a little kid" as they piont to their eyes and indicate the red band across the eyes, often describing as a mask like the Lone Ranger.

So that is as close to a correct defination of Kakariki as I can find.
