Jonny,
I think you may find the chick has died and is buried beneath the surface. Hens will bury chicks that die from either natural causes or have been killed. As I wrote in an earlier post, nest inspections are fraught with danger when dealing with young first time parents. If they become spooked by the interference it is more than likely the chick/s will be killed to prevent the danger from destroying the nest.
It is a tough call for breeders. Not knowing and wanting to see that all the hard work has paid off is a natural emotion. But, unfortunately nature has it's own way of dealing with these things and the results are often the same. My advice would be to remove the box and clean it out. Put in fresh nesting materials and re hang the box in a slightly different position. The pair should lay again and this time just leave them to go it alone. If you do this the pair may raise the young next time to a point where the babies can be removed and hand reared if required.
Jonny,
I think what Steps was saying is that the possible causes may have been rats/mice OR the fact that YOU upset the birds by disturbing the hen too much. If the problem was due to rodents the hen would have vacated the nest box as well so I would suggest the second cause is more likely the reason.
If the cockatiels were the problem I dont think the Kakariki would have gone down to nest in the first place.
