Kakariki Diet - Information from our Vet

I have recently checked with our avian vet in regard to the feeding of green vegetables such as Endive and Silverbeet. It had been suggested (in a previous post) that the feeding of these vegetables may in fact prevent the birds from receiving enough calcium intake.

Our Vet followed up this subject and has informed me that several avian nutrionists have confirmed that both Endive and Silverbeet are natural sources of calcium for birds. In actual fact the feeding of these vegetables on a regular basis can reduce the need for calcium supplements.

The intake and processing of nutition...minerails, vitamins, proteins etc is not just a matter of provide those....these also depend on other parts to be processed..not having these in the diet prevents the uptake even when supplied
eg Iron requires citric acid

Then on the other hand certain foods my limit the uptake of nutrients, but these themselves have required nutrients eg broccoli.
So this doent mean "dont feed" but rather a balanced diet.

Hence the need for a great variety of diet, rather than a 'supplement' diet ALL the time, everyday...not just as 'treats'

For yrs I never used suppliments, and never had a problem, then for the last 2 yrs started to use a calcuim/mineral suppliment (along with a consistant balanced diet)...saw no effect...other than a reduction in fertility (that can not be neccessarly associated with it)
We have now gone back to just the balanced diet as discussed here

Hi guys, well I thinks very important complemenatry diet of kakarikis with worm of meal. My breding season is very well.

Thats a 1st for this site, can u open a new thread telling us a little about the Kakariki breeding etc over there, its not a place we know much about in this respect.
Yes protien is an important part of Kakariki diet in the wild, espec around breeding

Well, Here in South America, we have a very well weather....
In this time I have 9 young kakarikis, from 2 pairs...
pair one: cock arlequin dominant
hen cinnamon green
pair two: cock cinnamon / ino
hen yelow with black eyes.
already i Have some questions:
1.- from second pair I get 5 chicks, 3 of them are yelow with red eyes, but the curiosly is this birds have on their bad some zone olive green.
some friends telling to me i have kakarikis falow and other telling kakarikis lace wing...
2.- what kind of food you given at your bird?
3.- what happen when do you mate one kakariki red fonted with other yelow...their chicks are hybrids?
