hi everyone

I have had some more eggs hatch, the babbies from the previous nest have shown intrest in going in the new nest with the new babbies. I am concerned as the hen (cini) just came rushing out and left the old babie in her current nest. THe new babbies were not injured this time but i fear that it could happen.

The cock (oscar) is still feading the old babbies they have only been flying for 2 or 3 weeks.

should i remove the babbies now or leave them with dad for longer. dad has not shown any aggression to any of the babbies.

thanks
james

Hi James if your babies have been out for 2 to 3 weeks i would say they can be pulled out. I dont think they would hurt the new babies but its better to by safe than sorry. If your still concerned you could put older babies in a smaller cage inside the aviary and watch to see if dad feeds them through the wire. Mum may get aggessive if they go into box with new babies and any of them could get injury in that situation. Cheers Kev

The hen may damage the older chicks if they get trapped in the new nest...she can be rather protective...
On the other hand we have on many occassions never had a problem, usually the latter is the case.
Chicks are usually removed about 2 weeks after leaving the nest...just as the isis forms.
Irt is a good idea to do so when breeding wilds because there can be difficulty in identfing chicks/parents.
Another trick is to swap eggs between yellow crown and red crown...that makes it easy to ID them signlol
