thats normal,

Consistently eating, I believe it may be a sign of mineral deficiency.
This is, in captive birds, is often a sign of insuffient, inconsistant supply of, and variety of diet.

eating their own droppings or whatever you wanna call it.

If this is due to lack of something, what should i do?

If i have to give him some kind of special mineral of some sort, what kind and does some sort of vegetable have it thats eatable by kakariki?

When talking about a diet, what you mean "variety" of diet?

http://www.kakariki.net/ftopict-12.html

I have stopped using mineral suppliments other than a few cat biskets once in a while
Plus added to the above link, regularly add thyme, chives, mint, rosemary, parsley (whatever keeps the herb garden tidy signlol) potato/carrot/pumpkin,kumura peelings from our dinner preparation
Dandelion flowers/leaves, roots, puha and milk thisle...

Think of it this way...
If you where locked up and had to live on bacon and eggs, potatoes, cabbage and a bit of meat..over time you would also get deficient in diet...
Same goes for capitive animals.

seeing you as a veteran breeder and me as not the most richest guy on earth (YET!)

i cant supply my little birdie with that much expensive vegetables that you ask off

some stuff like lettuce (which i know he will eat) i could do and some other low price vegetables. Not saying my kakariki doesnt deserve the best, cause he deserves it. Just that i cant afford it :\ stupid inflation

considering as well you live in their homeland. Now stuff like cat biscuits seems for me a bit over the edge since i dont know what the hell is in ours because neither our cats like them, so i dare not give em to Kira

Also some of the vegetables ive never heard off.

heres what i know

Celery (think im pretty sure what this is, can give to Kira)
carrot (duh)
cauliflower <--steamed? erm you mean like boiled or what? dont have a steamer o_O
broccoli <---- look on veggie up
peas (obvious)
sweetcorn (erm corn that is sweet? , dont think it should be hard to ask in store :)
grapes
apple
pear
orange
grapefruit (whats the difference between a grape and grapefruit?)
flower seeds (uhhh...what type?)

That leaves to the what the foozle is this list?
Puha
dandelion
capsicum
alfaalfa sprouts
mixed bean sprouts
silverbeet
runner beans
cabbage
nasturtiums leef
fusha berries
what type of cat biscuits? a bird actually eats that?
cuttlefish

Now might be because of my poor english knowledge or me just beeing raised in a english speaking country that might have made me silly over these names

But if you could find time to tell me more or less what those things are and also telling me what you mean with steamed? Since it sounds like you need a new household machine of some sort

Also wondering if i should do like you and place a small bowl in the cage with differently mixed vegetables?

fushia , house plant. We also have native onesd

cat biscuits are a great treat

Cuttlefish is the calcium suppliment derived from squid

I'm going to be blunt here, so please dont take offence, none is meant.
If u keep any animal/bird in captivity, u have a moral responsibility to provide the things to keep that animal in a Heath condition and environment.
It is no different to having children.

Our stock varies between 40 and 70 parrots, most kakarki.
.
These are figures are for Breeding season which id higher than the yearly ave.
SEED
Each year we go thru around 160 to 200 kg of parrot seed, and next to nothing is wasted

VEGGIES
With 45 birds, we go thru 6 to 7 kg of veggies plus fruit each week, again with very little waste...
Thats about 155gms/bird/week
1/3 to 1/2 of the bulk of this is peelings etc from the kitchen, and weeds cultivated in the gardens, and from neighbours and waste ground

CAT BISCUITS
A 400gm of cat biscuits/week (1/3 of a box)
Less than if u had a cat

FRUIT
About 8 apple size fruit/week..if u dont have fruit trees, get the bruised/ripe fruit (Discounted) from the local super market

Summary
These figures are a little high
75gms of seed/bird/week
100gms of veggies (to purchase) /week/bird about $NZ 0.25c NZ
1/2 an apple size fruit /week/bird (discounted price) about $NZ 0.15c
10gms cat biscuits/bird/week (400gm box lasts 3 weeks) about $NZ0.60c

That just under $NZ1/per week/bird or $US0.60c

A cat will cost 5 to 10 times that.

i have no problem supplying my bird, just saying that SOME vegetables are highly priced in this country

and my question remains , can kakariki's eat cucumber?

i gave my little Kira a big bowl of lettuce with some mixed fruit . He was rejoiced to see it but only ate the lettuce :)

I have always been told you shouldn't feed birds lettuce has it gives them the runs. Back to the poo thing I see my birds eating thier mates poo's striaght after thier done them. I thought it might have soming to do with them getting ready to breed.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 07, 2007 11:31 am    Post subject: whoops, did you forget?

I think you forgot to mention, sorry if you did. Poo eating is normal for several species of animals. First they see it as a food source- yuck for me. Some food is passed undigested.
Second, it contains what we now know as probiotics. There are good bacteria and bad bacteria in poo- if you watch closely most parents will pick up floor droppings with their babies meals and thus supply them with their own version of protective bacteria....
