Hi everyone,
Firstly.. I'd like to thank everyone on here for all the wonderful information on Kakarikis.!!
I purchased a kakariki not really knowing what I was in for, I'm an animal nut in general... but this bird gives me hours of enjoyment that I never expected.
I have used this site for ages to find out info on diet etc... now that I finally signed up as a member, i'm hoping you can tell me whether my little mate is a male or a female!!!!
please excuse the little fella (and the messy perch!!!!), he/she was woken up for the photo so he/she looks a little fuzzy and sleepy still!
tina it looks like a female to me the beak and head on a male is much bigger i had the same problem when i had mine until i was given a male the difference is quite noticable. There is a link in one of the forums that show pictures of both male and female.
The cinnamon mutation "lightens" the normal colouring of the feathers. It is a sex linked mutation meaning that cock birds can also be "split" to cinnamon (appear normal colour but are masking the cinnamon mutation underneath) but hens can not be "split".
