Hey, I have 2 kakarikis. My youngest bird, Minty, is a bit confusing on which sex.
For the first 4 or 5 months we had him we were told it was a girl, then we got his wings clipped and were told it was a boy. I just want to make sure cause he has been sticking his tail in the air and doing a strange cherp, we were told its a sign they want to mate.

The first kakariki we had, didnt have his wings clipped. My brother was in with him for a while before leaving the room and didnt realise he was flying towards him. My brother closed the door and our kakariki flew into it. Sadly he didnt survive, he broke his neck and was in pain for 15mins before dying. We now get both our kakarikis wings clipped every 8 months or so to prevent anything like that happening.

Female...
Use the "quick searc" block to the left pr seach button abovew for clipping

Kakariki are different in nature to most other parrots due to their hyperactivity...One runs in to problems with heath and wing clipping.
There are several documented issues in these forums on clipping

Wing clipping is something done for the conveince of the owner and not for the well being of the birds....
Like keeping a large dog in a small cage cause it is easier than building a large run, or fennced back yard...
Yes a door was closed...now they maybe on the floor and a door opens, they have no way of fast flight.
When one has such pets one also takes on a responsabilty, fully, to provide, not the min enviroment, but the best possible for them with all attention and care at 100%.

Thanks for the reply. We only get their wings clipped as thats what the seller/breeder told us. He said once a year or so. But if its not recommended then we wont have them clipped. The birds are always with somebody at all times and their cage is cleaned daily along with water. Food is changed every 3 days or so.
