Hi everyone
Well the aviary is finished. On time and looking fantastic thanks to the hard work of my wonderful husband Peter. The birds are due to fly in tomorrow, spot on schedule if all goes well. They are a breeding pair of Yellow Crown Kakariki's.
The cage was constructed out of bits lying around. The corner posts are the old swing set. The mullions (centre posts), are made from single bed rails.
The door is made out of the frame from a jolly jumper (baby jumping frame).
The roof is from an old garden shed. Part of the base was old floor joists.
The tree in the middle had been cut of some six months ago and was lying in the back of the garden. It makes a great centre piece for the aviary.

A few suggestions thu.
Around the base add a kick board about 200 to 250mm high.
Add an area where they can shelter during high wind/storms
NEEB as saftely door...kakariki are the quickest birds I know of.
A hole with a 20L bucket (with drainage holes in bottom) covered with netting, under the water tray.
Seriously consider automatic watering each day.
We started with seed feeders like those...now use seed trays, like youir water tray with higher sides....positioned so driving rain cant get to them.
That log on the ground, hang it towards the back as a perch
I would have covered to the bottom, the rear walls..better shelter
The clear lite on our avaiaries I have now covered to ibncrease shade area
1 avaiy with construction ply, the other with shade cloth, with an air gap about 100mm to reduce summer temps.

When they breed, you will need another flight/avairy as a holding flight...idealy with at least 2 flights.

We live in Queensland, so the weather gets very hot in the summer. The cage has a garden and also a rock wall on two sides. The floor is made from decomposed granite, which I rake weekly, same as the Gouldian Finch cage.. We also have little king Quail on the bottom, so a real little eco system happening. We have positioned it so as it is protected from the bad winds. If need be we will but roll down shutters like we have on my other cage. We have a very protected back yard.
I am a very particular bird owner, and my birds get fresh greens and water daily. They are very spoilt, but very healthy.

We have several species of quail ...and they often get chicks...
The kick boards will stop the chicks in the 1st few days jumping thru the mesh..

We also do that using Sun Shade cloth
We tried several alternatives to the floor...settled on sand mortar about 1/2 to 1 1/2 " thick (about a 20l bucket and 1/2). Over this we have a thin layer of pumice sand. Once a fortnight we rake out debis and scatter a little fresh sand(about 2 to 3 l) to 'top up'
This keeps the floors dry, preventing worm eggs...stops mice...and dont need to all change the sand when it gets sour over a yr or so. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
