OK- well my story so far:

I was wandering through my local pet shop when I came across a BEAUTIFUL bird. Turned out to be a Kakariki. Never before heard of one she really stole my heart and after visiting her eagerly for a week, yesterday she came home with me! Wink
I have named her PollyAnna and she is my pride and joy. angel

Looking through the other parts of the forum I have come to believe she is 'cinnamon'. Although I will post some pictures (when I get my camera back) and hopefully someone a little more knowledgeable can help me out.

One question I have is I have seen the word 'mutation' mentioned a lot and also mentioned with the colour cinnamon. Could someone please tell me what this means? Think

I am planning on taking things slowly with Polly as she is only about 6months old and not hand tamed yet... but we are slowly progressing. I am feeding her a parrot mix and also pieces of carrot and celery currently. I have a small shallow container of water for her bath. I am currently planning on purchasing a bigger cage. She seems happy enough in the current one but I would like to see her with more floor space. Angel

I have often observed her sitting on her perch with her tail pointing downwards? Is this normal? In all other areas she seems happy and content, eating, occasionally chirping and generally amusing herself.

Sorry to waffle on but I have really just fallen in love with my Kike and I want to make sure I can learn and do everything to help her live a long, happy, healthy life so anyone who has ANY information... (I need a book “Kakariki’s for dummies" Laughing ) please pass it on!!!

Kindest Regards, polly-anna

A mutation is where a natural animal/bird/plant throws a odd ball feature.
When this happens, breeders then build thru many generations to devalope genetically specialised "mutaions"
Siminlar in a way to farmers from the last few 1000 yrs, they grow corn, 1 plant will give a bigger cob, so they reuse the seed....
Most of our modern fruit is huge compared to the orginal 'wild' version.
ie a wild kiwi fruit is about 1/4 the size of what we get in the shops now.

Do not confuse with a hybrid...this is where 2 species are crossed.

most parrots eat more fruit and veggies than seed...
This is the main discussion on diet

To the left is the quick search block, and a search button above...
There are some very good older posts. if u use words like tame taming hand tame the search will list the posts

Thanks Steptoe!

So Mutation is nothing bad then? I was getting a bit worried!!!

She will accept my hand in her cage now and every now and then she will let me stroke her tummy, toes and wings! We are getting there!!!

She was talking and cackelling thismorning (cackel is that what you call the sound they make> they did in the petshop) It was SO cute!!!

When I am not with her during the day I leave the radio on for some background noise. To watch her from a distance it's almost as if she is dancing to certian types of music sometimes Laughing

Another question I have is are Kikes generally happy by themselves or is it better to have 2? What, if any, type of bird can be housed with them?

For the first six months or so she is being caged as we are in the middle of building a new home, once we have settled ourselves there, I am going to try and get a smaller avery/flight so I was thinking woudl it be better for her to have company then???

Thankyou again,

polly-anna

Hi there

Congratulation on becoming a Kaki owner. You have caught the Kaki bug too.
I have a beautiful yellow crown Kaki, his name is Tiki. I hand raised him and he is now almost 7 months old. He is a great little talker. Like most males (Ha ha).

Kaki's love to bath, so make sure she has a good size dish as they make a mess. Also I good size cage is a good idea. They like a flat roof as they like to climb unside down. They are great to watch.

I feed Tiki plus my other Kaki's, who are in the outside avairy, small parrot seed, plus fresh fruit and vegies daily. Kakariki's are good fruit eaters and they get very excited when they see me coming. Have fun with your new little treasure.
Cheers
