Hi Guys i have been talking to a guy from Tasmania Australia and he has two 4 month old Eastern Rosella x kakariki babies. The Eastern cock bird put his patner, a eastern hen down as well as a young cinnamon kakariki hen. He tells me the babies have charactoristics of both species being and little bit bigger than a kakariki with a longer tail. It would be interesting if they were fertile and put back to pure kakarikis to see if new colours could be produced. I will post some photos well i receive them. I believe this happen in England a few years ago as well. Has anyone else heard of this sort of cross before. Cheers Kev
Can u get pics..Itried contacting the guy Peter links to when it was 1st posted in these forums a yr or so ago.
E.Rosella are wild in NZ....most of the Nth Island, varing from many and large flocks to occassional sightings in the cities.
They are a major concern to NZ species, because of there agressiviness and they go to nest before NZ species, taking all the nesting spots.
As far as I know , there are no crossings in the wild.
Is there anyway this guy could contact us here...give more info as to how he got them to cross, how easy/hard it was, circumstances etc ? _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
No it shouldnt, but on the other hand it does piont out the genetic risks involved with introduced birds into the wild in NZ _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
If that poor, pathetic thing is the result of crossing a eastern with a kakariki then steps you have no problems with them crossing in the wild. those birds would last only a few days, i would doubt they could even fly properly,if at all. these birds are a good example of why we should not hydridize species And Kev they will not be fertile, thankfully!!!!!!!!
To be honest, and forgetting its a cross, once it gets thru its final molt, I think it could be quite attrative. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Looking at the feathers i would suggest that is as good as they will ever look. i doubt that they are in a moult, bent and twisted feathers are always a bad sign and very rarely recover but i may be proved wrong!! Interesting to see these birds have been offered for sale on another web site.
Indeed it does not look very fertile but looks can be deceiving. Any news on a back cross? That would be good data to obtain in regard to the feral rosella population in NZ.
We have very few kakariki in the wild
Roseela are very common
Rossella go to nest before NZ native speciis birds, this i out of sync with our wild birds and also stops our native species that use similar nesting (eg kakariki) hollow trees and such from breeding. There has been as far as I can find, nothing in the wild recorded or in capitivity.
The incidence above seems to be the only recorded incident of cross breeding
Attempts have been made to contact but their is no responce back. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
most proberly the same as our house parrot
A king, basically brought up with kakariki...
turns out he is bi lingual
Behaves like a king, but with the kakariki and the kings in the outside avaries...where as the kings. crimsons kakariki in the avaries just talk to their own species. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
