Hi!

although I know this has been discussed some times in this forum, I would be glad if you could give me your opinion about 2 hens of mine.

I bought one today which I suspected fallow, but after comparing her with my other cinnamon female... I think both of them are cinnamon. New hen's eyes look black with a light red tinge, and a normal red iris ring, I would say the same as the other cinnamon. I can't compare properly as the other hen is pied, so I kindly ask for your help. I shoot all pics with flash, as it was a bit dark today (very rainy).

You can find pics at http://picasaweb.google.com/pablo.caride

The hen in question:

What I think is a pied cinnamon hen:

Thanks in advance!

Hi Pablo,
Both birds are indeed Cinnamons. The red tinge in the eyes remain a few months after hatching, especially when you shine upon with a flashlight.

Hi Peter,

thanks for your useful comments. I was confused, as the only fallow kakariki I've seen so far had red eyes with natural light. Then the cinnamon mutation has a similar effect on eye colour in cockatiels (other case I know), which are born with red eyes but turns to black (sooner than kakariki though).

Peter, do you know more or less at what age they normally loose the red colour in the eyes?

And just a final question... would you mind to comment on this hen in particular? (crown, size, shape, etc...) I would be glad to know your valuable opinion. In my opinion the crown is a bit small but doesn't have the slightest yellow tinge.

Thanks a lot!!!

Pablo

EDIT: By the way... I have her ring number in my pocket, and maybe is familiar for someone: NB07-LB4115 If it's familiar for someone I would appreciate that you let me know. Thanks!

Pablo, the cinnamon's are born with red eyes and turn quickly into black, yet before they open their eyes. But when you shine upon their eyes they are still red. If I'm not mistaking, it take some time for Cinnamons to develop melanine granules in their eyes. The red which is still visible is the reflection of blood along the immature melanin granules. Only when these granules are fully grown, there is no longer a reflection of blood. I'm not sure but I think it takes about 4 months to reach this stage.

The crown of the hen looks good on my computer. The size of the crown is a matter of taste. Most important is the purity of the red.

Hi Peter,

thanks for your explanation about eye colour for the cinnamon mutation.

Regarding the qualities of this hen, I meant her general size and shape (and other attributes), not only the crown. Feel free to comment on her, I won't be dissappointed if you see any defects.

Now for the crown... she doesn't have any yellow in it, although I think she has some green/cinnamon feathers in between, and the limit of the crown isn't very well defined in my opinion. The size of the crown is similar in my 3 kakariki hens (pure), and to me it seems a lot smaller (proportionally) than cock's crowns, but none of the 3 hens seem to have any yellow on it.

Thanks for your help!

Regards / Pablo

The size shape of the crown on our wilds seems to be completely random...as is the spot behind the eye.
Those there MAYBE a slight case for a smaller crown on the females, more often????
